Although nowadays the majority of people prefer to learn out about the news from the Internet or TV, reading is still an important leisure activity in Britain and there is a very large number of books, newspapers and magazines devoted to a wide variety of subjects. The biggest-selling magazines in Britain (after TV guides which sell over 3 million copies a week) are women’s and pop music publications.

The best-selling books are not great works of literature but stories of mystery and romance which are sold in huge quantities (Agatha Christie’s novels, for example, have sold more than 300 million copies). It has been estimated that only about 3 per cent of the population read «classics» such as Charles Dickens or Jane Austin, whereas popular book sales can be enormous, particularly if the books are connected with TV shows or dramatisations.

Read the article about schools in Britain and say if the statements true or false.                   Schools in Britain

Ted and Mark go to a typical British school. When they were eleven, they left their primary school and went to the secondary school. Now they are thirteen and they are in year 8.

British schoolchildren study the same subjects and have the same lessons until they are thirteen. At thirteen they choose the subjects they want to do for the national GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) exams. They take these exams in year 11 (at the age of sixteen). British children should take national exams in six subjects, although they might take more. Then they might stay at school for two more years and study for two or more A-level1 exams. But they might leave school after their GCSEs. Ted and Mark are doing eight subjects. They have to study English and Maths, and they have chosen French, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Art and Design, and Information Technology2 . Their classmates chose different subjects so they don’t have many lessons together even though they are still in the same form. They’re taking their GCSE exams in June. They also do PE but there isn’t a PE exam.

Ted and Mark go to school from Monday to Friday. School starts at 9 o’clock. There is a 20-minute break at half past 10. They have lunch at one o’clock. A few people go home but most of them eat lunch in the canteen.

Afternoon lessons start at quarter to 2 and finish at quarter to 4. After school the boys do sport. In their school pupils can also join the music group or belong to a club. When they get home, they have to do their homework.

They like their school but Ted hates the uniform they have to wear. After school the boys would like to go to a university but none of them has decided what they want to study yet

6.What was the population of San Francisco

It was January, 1848. A man was digging near the small village of San Francisco? California.

Suddenly he saw something shiny- gold!

By the next year the California gold rush began. Thousands of men came to California. They were called “forty-niners”, after the year 1849. The forty-niners came from all around the United States.

They even came from other countries, including Mexico, Australia, China, France, and England. They left their families and jobs, and made the difficult trip to California. They all shared the dream. They all wanted to make fortune in gold. Towns and camps grew quickly wherever gold was found. These towns were rough places. There was almost always a saloon, where the men drank whiskey and gambled at cards. In mining towns men stole and sometimes killed for gold. Did the miners make their fortune? Some did, especially those who came early and were lucky. In 1848, miners usually made about twenty dollars a day. In 1852 miners made about six dollars a day. Many other people came to California to make money from the miners. Prices were very high. A loaf of bread, which cost five cents in New York, cost almost a dollar in San Francisco. In 1848 San Francisco had been a village. Six years later it was a city with a population of 50,000. In 1850 California had enough people to become a state.
