Flamenco is very popular in southern Spain. It begins with guitar music and clapping and then dancers join the performance. A woman sometimes dances alone and she sometimes dances with a man. The woman usually wears a long colorful dress. She moves her arms and hands slowly but her feet move in fast, complicated steps. The man often wears black. Both dancers click their shoes on the floor when they dance around each other.

Cossack dances are from Russia and Ukraine. They are very energetic – some are more like gymnastics than dancing! Dancers have to be very fit because they jump very high and kick their legs up and down. They often jump over big swords. The movements are similar to traditional Cossack activities, for example, sword fighting and getting on and off horses.

Limbo dancing is originally from West Africa but today, it is an important part of celebrations in the Caribbean. Young people have to dance under a horizontal pole. The pole is often on fire and the dancer mustn’t touch it! After a successful ‘limbo’, they put the pole lower and do it again. Some dancers can dance under a pole just 20cm from the floor!

Mask dances are important for the Dogon people in Mali. Each village makes different masks. They are often huge and colorful. There are masks of people, monsters or local animals like crocodiles, hyenas and monkeys. Mask dancers are always men and they dance to the sound of drums for hours after the death of a person in the village. Nowadays, Dogon villagers also perform the dances for tourists.

Using colours to do homework  (transcript)

http://learnenglishteens.britishcouncil.org/skills/listening-skills-practice

Girl: My presentation is about how you can use colour coding to organise your homework.

To start you need a few things from the stationery shop. This photo shows the things I use. They aren’t expensive. They are all cheap. I’ve got coloured pens and pencils, sticky notes, page markers, glue and folders.

First, I choose a different colour for each school subject. The colour I choose has to be easy to remember so I make sure it means something to me. Maths is green because my ruler is green. PE is yellow because my trainers are yellow.

Here is a photo of my folders. I use the cheapest kind and I add a coloured sticky note to the top and to the front. I keep all my notes inside the different folders.

This is a photo of some more sticky notes. I wrote them in the library when I was studying. The blue notes are for history. My history teacher has got a blue car! The black notes are for geography. One day I want to visit the Black Sea.

This photo shows the pages I need to read for homework. I use two coloured page markers to mark where it starts and ends. Those blue ones mark the pages I need to read for history.

Finally, this last photo shows my wall calendar. This green star shows I have a maths test on Friday. This pink circle shows I’ve got French homework for Monday. It’s pink because ‘pink’ is ‘rose’ in French … and the rose is my favourite flower.
