                               Today we go on with our talk about two beautiful cities

                                and their history. One of the oldest Ukrainian and

                                European cities is Kyiv. And one of the oldest Scottish

                                and European cities is Edinburgh.

                                   So, we’ll make around Kyiv and Edinburgh tour,   1

                                speak about some of their places of interests and their

                                 famous persons.

                                Welcome to our Kyiv – Edinburgh Bridge.

             show you my native city?

      Ш:  Oh, of course, with pleasure. And I can tell you about my native ci-

             ty too.

      У:   It’s great! I’ll be glad to listen your story.

                         Ukraine is a great marvel, a country of soaring mountains, sparkling rivers, wonderful seas and lakes. It is located in the south-eastern part of Europe. Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine, one of the most ancient European cities and its history goes back to 862.

                        

                          Scotland is situated in the northern part of the island of Great Britain. It is the capital of Scotland, is the political and cultural centre. It is the centre of government and commercial life. Many art festivals are held here.

Українка:  The city is situated on the high hills on the banks of the Dnipro river. It is one of the biggest rivers in Europe. Шотландець:  It’s a famous Loch Ness lake in Scotland.   Учениця:  People living in Scotland believe that there is a strange monster in the deep lake Ness. They call it Nessy.     The calm place Loch Ness

 

is situated in the picturesque place of Scotland. Its shores are covered with thick forests and greenery.

                            and mysterious place.

Українка:  St. Sophia’s Cathedral is the historical and cultural monument well-known in the world. Its exterior was changing, but the interior keeps invariable. We can see mosaics and frescos from 11 century in it.   Учень розповідає легенду про Марію Оранту.

             Відразу, увійшовши в собор, ви побачите мозаїчне зображення Марії Оранти – Богородиці, якій присвячено храм («Софія» з грецької означає «премудрість Божа») Існує легенда: коли орда захопила Київ, татари влаштували в храмі конюшню, почали розпалювати вогнища на мозаїчній підлозі і, розважаючись, пускати стріли у зображення Марії Оранти. Але смальта, з якої була викладена мозаїка, розташована під різними кутами, і стріли або падали вниз, втрачаючи силу і лише торкнувшись до образу Богородиці, або рикошетом летіли назад. Злякані варвари не могли зрозуміти, що ж це за такий всесильний Бог, що відкидає стріли. Про всяк випадок вони вирішили піти геть з собору.

           Відтоді кияни почали називати Оранту «Непорушною стіною» і вважати її покровителькою та захисницею міста.

Шотландець:   The Castle looks like a castle from a fairy-tale, and parts of it are more than a thousand years old. Inside the Castle you can see beautiful stained-glass windows which reproduce the real spirit of the past.

Слово вчителя:  I hope you know our famous Golden Gates.

                                                 

Українка: Golden Gates is a compound engineering construction, which consists of the tower, the church and the gate. And only the friend could enter the city.

Учениця розповідає про Золоті ворота.

             Через ворота в Київ мав право увійти лише друг. За вхід треба було сплатити велике мито, тому ворота називали Золотими. За іншою версією, Золотими їх називали тому, що самі ворота були обшиті пластами міді, яка на сонці виблискувала, як золото. Існує ще багато версій, але зрозуміло лише одне: справжнього золота тут ніколи не було.

            Зате золотими були серця захисників Золотих воріт.

            За всю історію існування жоден ворог не міг взяти їх штурмом. Навіть коли у 1240 році підійшов до Києва хан Батий на чолі татаро-монгольської орди, кияни не похитнулися. Похитнулось, як це не дивно, серце самого безжалісного хана. Побачивши Київ, що сяяв на сонці золотом всіх своїх 300 церков, він настільки пройнявся видовищем, що послав своїх послів до Києва з такими словами: «Я підкорив пів-світу, але міста такої краси я не бачив. Здавайтесь – мені шкода його руйнувати.» Але місто відмовилось здатись. Десять тижнів і три дні воно захищалось від татаро-монгольської орди. І Золоті ворота так і не були взяті приступом. Батий увійшов в Київ через Лядські ворота, які були гірше захищені. Увірвавшись в місто, орда зруйнувала Золоті ворота, які так довго стримували натиск. Вони були реконструйовані у 1982 р. і ми можемо їх побачити сьогодні.  5

Шотландець:  Scottish were very brave and freeloved people. They always defended their native land.

Українка:  It’s the monument to Volodymyr Sviatoslavych the Great. We can see the representation of christening (хрещення) of Kyivites, which took place in the waters of Pochaina River.

          

Слово вчителя:  And this monument is in Edinburgh.

Шотландець:  There is a monument to Prince Volodymyr, the ruler of Kyiv Rus, in Edinburgh. Scottish people cherish the memory of St. Volodymyr too.

Українка:  It’s Shevchenko National University. Учень:  One of the main higher educational establishments in Kyiv is Shevchenko National University. The students of this establishment were: Mykhaylo Bulgakov, Maxym Rylskyi, Pavlo Chubynskyi, Mykhaylo Starytskyi, Volody-

myr Vynnychenko and others. The emperor Nikolay the First inaugurated it in 1834 and said: “it will become the fortress of the intellect”

 

Слово вчителя:  There are many universities in Edinburgh. And this is

                               one of them.

Шотландець:  There is a very famous University in Edinburgh. Many students come to study there. The architecture of the University is ancient, old and very beautiful.

Українка:  The greenery of Kyiv adds a lot of to its glory.

Учениця:  Since ancient times the Kyivites have taken care of the parks and gardens of the capital. These parks and gardens not only decorate Kyiv but also serve as the place of the rest for many people.

Every last Sunday of May the Kyiv Spring Festival is traditionally held in the city.                                                                                                          7

Шотландець:  Edinburgh is a beautiful city. The tourists call Edinburgh “The Athens of the North”, because the city is very picturesque and colorful.

Учень:  Many visitors come to the city to take part in Edinburgh International Festival every summer. It is often visited by English and European guests.

 

Question:  What festival is held in spring in one of the European cities?

                   a) Spring Festival in Kyiv;

                              Patriots and love their countries very much.

                              Every country has its outstanding poets and writers, and

                              every country is proud of them.

                              We want to tell you about famous Scottish poet Robert

                               Burns.

Шотландець:  He was born in Scotland in 1759. At the age of 15 Robert began to write his first poems. He wrote about his native country and about the life of poor people.   Учень читає вірш Роберта Бернса “My Heart’s in the Highlands” англійською мовою. Учениця – українською мовою.

Учениця:  Another famous writer, who was born in Edinburgh, is Robert Louis Stevenson. He said: “You turn a corner, and there is the sun going down into the Highlands hills. You look down an alley, and see ships tacking for the Baltic”.

 

Слово вчителя:  Ukraine has own famous poets and writers. You

                              can hear about some of them now. They loved

                              Kyiv very much and wrote about it.

Учениця:  Dmytro Lutsenko is a favorite Ukrainian poet. His famous song about Kyiv became the best about our city. We are proud by his talent. We are proud that he is our compatriot.                         9

             

Слово вчителя:  Natalia Zabila and her “Kyiv in spring”.

Учень:  She was born in Russia. But almost all her life she lived in Ukraine. Natalia Zabila has written a lot of poems about Kyiv, which became her native city.

                      Зацвіли каштани

                      Біля круч Дніпра.

                                      Теплий вітер віє,

                               It’s the One O’clock Gun. Does anybody knows this

                               boy? I want to introduce him to you.

Учень з фото:  Have you ever been to Edinburgh? Haven’t you? Look! It’s the One O’clock Gun which is fired every day in Edinburgh Castle. And every citizen in Edinburgh checks their clocks by it.

Слово вчителя:  Both countries and capitals have their unique and glory history. And you know: “East or West home is the best”. We have to know our past and to see in our future. That’s why you have to study languages to be clever and successful, to love your school and your teachers. Do you love your school? Do you love your teachers? We love you too.
