Lesson "Earth Day: Language Buddy lab"
Про матеріал
This 60-minute Earth Day lesson introduces A2-level students to essential environmental vocabulary through interactive and collaborative activities. Students begin by matching complex English terms (like biodegradable and renewable) with their German translations to build a strong foundational understanding. They then read a short contextual text to see these words in action before working in teams for a high-energy recycling race, sorting 18 household waste items into plastic, paper, and glass bins. The lesson concludes with a pair-work discussion where students use simple question frames to talk about their green habits and make a personal commitment to help protect the planet.Lesson Plan: Earth Day: Language Buddy Lab

● ask and answer simple questions using "Do you...?" and "How often do you...?" to discuss everyday green habits and their personal impact on the environment.
● express a simple personal commitment to help the Earth using at least one new piece of environmental vocabulary.
1. Warm-Up (10 minutes)
● Activity: Brainstorming and Introduction.
● Teacher Action: Write "EARTH DAY" on the board and draw a planet. Ask students: What is Earth Day? When is it? (April 22nd).
● Student Action: Brainstorm words they already know in English related to nature and the environment (e.g., trees, water, plastic, recycle).
2. Listening Focus: English-German Matching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPf6Kvn2I9Q ● Activity: Watch the video.
● Student Action: Answer the following questions
1 On what date do people around the world celebrate Earth Day every year? [00:08]
2 Why do people have to wear masks just to go outside in some cities in India, China, or Pakistan? [01:07]
3 What are three small things you can do at home to save water and energy? [02:24]
4 When and in which country did the very first Earth Day take place? [05:03]
5 What record-breaking event happened in India for Earth Day in 2006? [05:34]
3. Vocabulary Focus: English-German Matching (10 minutes)
● Activity: Polilingual Word Association
● Student Action: In pairs, students receive a worksheet to match the English environmental terms with their German translations and translate them into Ukrainian

4. Reading & Fill-in-the-Blanks ● Activity: Contextual Practice.
● Task: Students read a short text about Earth Day and fill in the missing words using the English vocabulary from the list above.
Our Planet
Our Earth is a beautiful ecosystem. Trees give us oxygen to breathe, and plants grow in healthy soil. However, our planet faces many problems. Pollution from factories damages the air and water, and throwing litter on the street hurts animals.
Because we burn too much fossil fuel like oil and coal, greenhouse gases fill the air. This causes climate change and global warming, which melts the Polar ice cap. To save our resources, we need to stop using non-renewable energy and switch to renewable energy, like installing solar panels. We should also buy organic food and use products that are biodegradable so they do not pollute the Earth.
5. Group Activity: Sort the Waste! Activity Type: Team Race & Matching Game Materials Needed:
● Three boxes or bags labeled as recycling bins: Plastic, Paper, and Glass.
● A set of word cards for each group (the 18 items printed or written on small slips of paper).
Instructions for the Teacher
1. Divide the class into small groups of 3 to 4 students.
2. Give each group a mixed-up set of the 18 item cards.
3. Place the three labeled bins (Plastic, Paper, Glass) at the front of the classroom.
4. Tell the groups they must sort their cards into the correct bins as fast as possible, but they can only carry one card at a time per person.
The Task (Student Worksheet / Flashcards)
Students must look at the following items and decide which bin they belong to:
Group 1: Plastic Bin
● water and soda bottles
● milk and juice jugs
● detergent and shampoo bottles
● yogurt tubs and margarine containers
● peanut butter and condiment jars
● plastic grocery bags (via retail drop-off)
Group 2: Paper Bin
● newspapers
● cardboard boxes
● office paper
● magazines
● junk mail
● cereal boxes
Group 3: Glass Bin
● beverage bottles
● food jars
● perfume and cologne bottles ● pharmaceutical glass bottles
● cosmetic jars
● glass drinkware
Follow-up Speaking Step
Once all groups finish sorting, the teacher pulls a few cards out of the bins and asks the teams:
● "Group A, how often do you recycle magazines at home?"
● "Group B, do you use water and soda bottles, or do you have a reusable bottle?"
6. Speaking Task: Your Carbon Footprint ● Activity: Pair Work / Mini-Discussion.
● Task: Students ask each other questions using the structure "Do you...?" or "How often do you...?" to discuss their personal carbon footprint.
● Prompts on the board:
○ Do you pick up litter when you see it?
○ Does your family use solar panels or other renewable energy?
○ Do you separate your garbage into plastic, glass, and biodegradable waste?
7. Cool-Down & Wrap-Up ● Activity: The 3-Word Promise.
● Task: Each student chooses one action they can take to help the Earth, using at least one new English vocabulary word.
● Example: "I will not leave litter in the park," or "I want to lower my carbon footprint."
