London is the capital of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. It is in the south-west of England.1______________________________The best time to visit London is summer. The weather is sunny and hot. It’s wet and rainy in spring and it’s snowy and cold in winter. Sometimes it’s foggy but very beautiful in any season of the year._2_____________________________In August and September you can visit some of the rooms of Buckingham Palace, The Queen’s home. At half past eleven most mornings the soldiers at Buckingham Palace “change the guard”. It takes about 30 minutes. You can also visit one of the most famous buildings, the Tower of London. Beefeaters meet you and tell you about the history of the Tower.
There are the Crown Jewels in the Tower and famous black birds, ravens outside. Tower Bridge is near the Tower of London. St Paul’s Cathedral is not far away. It is famous for its “Whispering Gallery”. Don’t forget to look at a very famous London church, Westminster Abbey. There is coronation of the Kings and the Queens of England. The Houses of Parliament are next to it. This is the home of the British government. The clock on it is Big Ben.
3_____________________________When you are tired of looking buildings, you can sit or walk in London’s parks. There is Hyde Park where you can listen to the speakers and take a boat. There is Kensington Gardens next to it where you can see the statue of Peter Pen. There is Regent’s Park, the home of London Zoo. In summer’s evenings you can enjoy Shakespeare’s plays there. There are the best theatres in the world, but tickets are expensive. There are lots of cinemas to visit. You can sometimes get cheap tickets on Mondays. One of the interesting museums to see is Madam Tussauds’s. There are wax figures of famous people from the past and of today.
_4______________________________The most famous shops in London – is Harrods. Oxford Street has many big and excellent shops – Selfridges, Marks and Spencer, John Lewis, Debenhams. Charing Cross Road is famous for its bookshops. One of the oldest and most famous is Foyles. It has thousand of books. There are two very famous markets. Petticoat Lane market is in Middlesex Street, and is a good place to buy cheap clothes. At the market in Portobello Road (open on Saturdays) you can buy old clocks, old tables and chairs and so on.
__5____________________________________London is a cosmopolitan city so there is food from every country. In Soho you can try Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Greek and Indian dishes plus many, many more. There are English pubs. In many pubs you can eat and drink. Why not try some English fish and chips? Or have you “tea” at the Ritz in Piccadilly?
__6___________________________________In London there are more than one thousand hotels. The beautiful and the most expensive Claridge's hotel is $5,482 a night, but there are cheap and comfortable hotels from 20 $ a night in London Bloomsbury. __7___________________________________A quick and easy way to get to different places in the city is to use an Underground. The trains run all day and most of the night. You can see much more of London from the Double-decker Bus. London’s taxis are called “black cabs”. They are fast but very expensive. London Eye is a great way to see London for a short time.
