            We ♥ London

 

 Slide-1   WE love London. It’s big and noisy and full of people, and it is one of the most amazing and wonderful cities in the world. It’s an historical city, a royal city, a theatrical city, a fashionable city, a working city and a great city to explore.

 

Slide-2       Royal London
London has been a seat of royal power for more than a thousand years. The three major, are Westminster, St James’s and Buckingham Palaces.
 

Slide-3       St James’s Palace
St James’s Palace was built by Henry VIII in 1532.

St James’s became the official royal residence. Members of the royal family have houses or apartments within

the palace today.


Slide-4       Buckingham Palace
Buckingham Palace was built in the 1700s for the first Duke of Buckingham. It is official home of the Queen now. You can tell when the Queen is at home because a flag flies from the top of the flagpole at the front of the palace.

 

 

 

Slide-5        Changing the Guard

Every day April to July  the ceremony known as the Changing of the Guard takes place. The Royal Guards are all professional soldiers and belong to a special division  of the Btitish Army.

 

             Just for Fun

London has lots of attraction that are there just for fun.

 

Slide-6           London Eye

This wheel was put up on the South Bank of the Thames in 2000, as part of London’s  Millennium celebrations.

The eye is the largest passenger-carrying wheel ever built. It is 135 metres high and turns very slowly, at a speed of 0.26 metres per second. As it turns, the 32 glass and steel passenger capsules are carried around with it. The journey takes 30 minutes.

 

      Museums and Galleries
London has many museums and art galleries, and there is something for everyone.

 

Slide-7  The British Museum

This museum has exhibits covering every period of human history. Don’t miss the Egyptian Rooms, with their fantastic collection of ancient mummies  both human and animal, coffins and statues.

 

Slide-8   Greenwich National Maritime Museum                                                         and Royal Observatory

Greenwich is to the east of London, on the Thames. The Royal Observatory is famous for being the home  of the ‘Prime Meridian’, the line that divides the world into east  and west and from which the world’s time is measured.

 

Slide-9   The Museum of London

The best way to find out about the history of London is to go to the Museum of London. This museum covers everything from prehistoric times, up to today. Look our for the oldest skeleton found in  London (about 5,500 years old) and discover what ancient people  threw into the Thames to please the gods.

There are loads of ancient Roman remains. There are clothes , jewellery and swords from the Middle Ages. Admire the Lord Mayor’s golden coach, and walk through a Victorian shopping street.

 

             Looking at Paintings

Slide-10  London has lots art galleries, but the four biggest are the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery, Tate Modern and Tate Britain. They all have quite different collections.

 

 

 

          

            Green London

London has lots of parks and green spaces. Some of the largest are the royal parks which were once used only by the king queen there days they are open to everyone.

 

There are eight royal parks around London. Four of them – Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park, Green Park and St James’s Park – stretch across the centre of London to Whitehall.

 

  Slide-11   Hyde Park

Hyde Park is the biggest of these four. Today, there is boating on the Serpentine. You can cycle and rollerblade on the roads in the park, play tennis, or go horse-riding.

 

Slide-12   Green Park

Green Park runs from Hyde Park. Now, its broad, shady walks are a favourite place for joggers.
