Scotland

Scotland is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. Occupying the northern third of the island of Great Britain, Scotland shares a border with England to the south, and is otherwise surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean; with the North Sea to the east, and the North Channel and Irish Sea to the south-west. The country is made up of more than 790 islands, including the Northern Isles and the Hebrides.

Edinburgh, the country's capital and second-largest city, is one of Europe's largest financial centres. Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, was once one of the world's leading industrial cities and now lies at the centre of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. Scottish waters consist of a large sector of the North Atlantic and the North Sea, containing the largest oil reserves in the European Union. This has given Aberdeen, the third-largest city in Scotland, the title of Europe's oil capital.

The Scots have a reputation for being stern and practical. They have been especially important in engineering and medicine. The Highland culture is a very rich one. Everyone who is a true highlander belongs to a clan. Each clan has its own particular tartan from which the pattern of the kilt , the traditional dress, is made. Scotland is a country of beautiful landscapes, about which many songs have been written. These are often played on the traditional instrument, the bagpipes.

Scottish Food: Haggis “The National Dish of Scotland” - is made from the lung, liver and heart of a sheep. These parts are mixed with oatmeal and spices, and then stuffed into the sheep’s stomach.

Christmas Day and New Year’s Day Celebrations.

Until recently, Christmas was not widely celebrated in Scotland. In the past, Christmas was purely a religious holiday. Children did receive presents on this day; however, people would still go in to work. New Year’s was the main holiday celebration of Scotland.

The traditional Burns Supper, Hogmanay and St Andrews Day celebrations are still very much a part of Scottish culture but the Scots are now joined on these special days by Scot-o-philes across the globe.
