People all over the world are fond of sports & games. Sport makes us healthy, keeps us fit, more organized & disciplined. It unites people of different classes & nationalities. Many do sports on their own initiative. They go in for skiing, skating, table tennis, swimming, volley-ball, football, body-building, etc. All necessary facilities are provided for them: stadiums, sport grounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, skiing stations, football fields.
Sport is paid much attention in our educational establishments. Gymnastics is a part of children’s daily activities in the kindergartens. Physical culture is a compulsory subject at our schools & colleges. Professional sport is also paid much attention in our country. In our city there are many different sporting societies, clubs & complexes.
Practically all kinds of sports are popular in our country, but football, gymnastics & tennis enjoy the greatest popularity. As for me, I go in for table tennis (Ping-Pong). It needs mobility, liveliness & much energy. It keeps a person in a good form. I have been playing tennis for five years, but the more I play, the more I like it. I get a real joy taking part in competitions or simply playing with my friends. Sometimes I go to tennis courts.
We all need to exercise. Even if you don’t plan to make a career in sport, you still have to practice. Regular exercises give you more energy. That is why many people who suffer from general tiredness should take more exercise than more rest. Exercise makes you feel & look better. The best exercise is the one which involves in repeated movements. Those are walking, jogging or swimming. Bending&stretching will add flexibility& feeling of lightness.
The most popular outdoor winter sports are shooting, hunting, hockey&, in the countries where the weather is frosty & there is much snow, skating, skiing &tobogganing. It’s so nice to go to the skating rink on a frosty sunny day! Some people prefer to be out of town in such weather & to sledge or to ski in the woods. Many people enjoy figure-skating & ski-jumping.
Summer affords excellent opportunities for swimming, boating, yachting, cycling, gliding& many others. Among outdoor games football enjoys the first place in public interests. The other games that have firmly established themselves in favour in different countries are cricket, volley-ball, basket-ball, & so on. Badminton is also very popular both with young & old.
All the year round many people indulge in boxing, wrestling, gymnastics, &track-&-field events. Scores of young girls & women go in for calisthenics. Among indoor games which one can go in for all the year round are billiards, table tennis, draughts& chess.

Sports Day
Most schools in England have a sports day once a year, in the late spring or in the summer. As my school is in London, in a place with no playing-field, we go to a special running track which belongs to the London County Council.
The sports day is looked forward to by the whole school. On that day we have no lessons. We look at the sky every day for a week beforehand, hoping that it will be fine; even if we cannot have a real sunny day, at least we don’t want any rain.
We go to school on the day itself, the sky is blue with no clouds, but we take a mackintosh with us in case; we also take a packed lunch. Outside the school is a fleet of buses to take us to the field. It is half an hour’s ride.
When we arrive, all the competitors change into their sports clothes, shorts and shirts or vests, and the spectators find places on the sloping banks round the track, ready to cheer up their teams. The running track is circular and inside it, there are places for high jump, the long jump, throwing the discus and the hurdles races. All these events take place at the same time as the running, so there is plenty to watch. There is a large blackboard on which the results are chalked up for all to see, and as the day goes on it is possible to see which team is ahead or has the best chance of winning.
Our school is divided into six teams, or, as we call them, ‘houses’; each ‘house’ has a different colour and the competitors wear the colour of their ‘house’. The ‘house’ with the most points at the end of the day wins a trophy, either a shield or a cup.
