Nicknames of the U.S. Presidents

Nicknames for Presidents of the United States have been bestowed on these men since George Washington. Some are childhood nicknames - such as "Dutch" for Ronald Reagan - while others are political or military names given prior to reaching the presidency. "The Father of Our Country" is the most popular nickname given to George Washington. Some other nicknames for Washington were "Americus Fabius", "The Cincinnatus of the West", "Atlas of America", "Deliverer of America" and "Savior of His Country."

The third president, Thomas Jefferson, built and lived in a magnificent home called Monticello. Jefferson was called the "Sage of Monticello."

Andrew Jackson, the seventh president, was known as "Old Hickory." Jackson earned that nickname during the War of 1812. He led a ragged ill-provisioned army, slept on the ground with the troops and ate the same troop rations. His troops said admiringly, "He's tough as hickory." Jackson won the Battle of New Orleans and became a national hero with the nickname "Hero of New Orleans."

John Tyler is known to be an “Accidental President” and “His Accidency” because Tyler received the job because Harrison died in office.

Abraham Lincoln – “The Great Emancipator”, “Black Republican”, “The Illinois Baboon”, and “The Original Gorilla” - because he emancipated the slaves. He was also called “The Sectional President” - because the country was divided during his term. “The Martyr” - he was assassinated.

James A. Garfield, the 20th president, only served about six months. At the 1880 Republican convention Garfield was nominated on the 36th ballot because the delegates finally compromised on the dark horse candidate. Garfield was shot by Charles Guiteau on July 2, 1881, and died on September 19, 1881. So Garfield became known as the "Martyr President."

Theodore Roosevelt was the youngest man to become president at age 43. Theodore Roosevelt gave his nickname "Teddy" to the teddy bear which is still one of the most loved stuffed animals of children. He earned the nickname "Rough Rider" from the calvary regiment of the same name that he had helped organize for the war with Spain. Roosevelt was known for leading the Rough Riders up San Juan Hill in Cuba.

Calvin Coolidge became the 30th president upon the death of Warren Harding in 1923. Coolidge didn't appear very happy in photos taken with groups visiting the White House. He became known as "Silent Cal."

The 32nd president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, offered the New Deal to the people as the nation was in the depths of the Great Depression so he became known as the "Father of the New Deal." However, most persons refer to him as FDR. Ike was the nickname for Dwight D. Eisenhower. It seems most presidents since FDR have been given initials for a nickname - JFK for Kennedy and LBJ for Lyndon Johnson.

George W. Bush was nicknamed like “Bush 43, “Bush the Younger”, “Baby Bush - all references to him being the son of George Bush (41st president). “Dumbya” - a play on Dubya due to his poor grasp of the English language (nuculer) and his numerous business failures

As for the Barack Obama's Nicknames, he is called Barry by friends and family. ‘Barry O’Bomber’ was Obama’s nickname at the Honolulu high school where he favored a left-handed double pump shot. Obama was given the code name "Renegade" by his secret service agents.
