My New School Is Fantastic!

Rita Nelson is fourteen, and she has changed her school because her parents moved to another town this summer.

“Let me tell you about my new school. I’m having a great time. All pupils are very friendly, but it’s very different from my old school. I can tell you! First of all school starts at 8.00 here.. This morning I forgot about it and got to school ten minutes late, so the teacher put a note into my record-book. I was really angry!

There are a lot of other differences in this school, of course. We have seven lessons here almost every day. What else? The school day is different, too. In my former school we finished school at 3.00, and then most pupils went home. Here we finish lessons at 3.30, and then most pupils go to sports practice. Well, they love sports here.

I joined gymnastics and football clubs here. A lot of girls play football in this school. I had my first practice yesterday, and I feel tired today.

Another important thing here is learning to do practical things. We do a lot of hand make products .  It’s fantastic.“

Food and Drinks (English Meals)

The Englishmen usually have four meals a day: breakfast, lunch, tea (5 o'clock) and dinner. Breakfast can be a full "English breakfast" of cornflakes with milk and sugar, or bacon and eggs, toast and marmalade, tea or coffee. Some people have just a cup of tea or coffee with a toast. This is usually called "continental breakfast". At midday everything is stopped for lunch. Most offices and small shops are closed for an hour and people visit cafes, coffee bars or restaurants for lunch. Factory workers usually eat in their canteens. The Englishmen like what they call "good plain food". They must know what they are eating. Usually they like steak, roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, fish and chips. Afternoon tea is at about 5 o'clock. It is a cup of tea with cakes or biscuits. Dinner is usually at 7 o'clock. The main course can be fish or meat (roast beef) with a lot of vegetables. The next course is something sweet, such as fruit pie. Last of all there may be cheese, often with biscuits. The English are fond of tea. The Boy who Saved the Netherlands.

Many years ago in Harlem, Holland, there lived a young boy. His name was Hans and he was eight years old. One autumn day, Hans went across the channel to visit an old blind man. He took the man some biscuits and stayed there for a while. Then, Hans decided to return home.

“Be careful, Hans” said the old man. “The water in the canal usually gets higher in autumn.” On his way home, Hans sang a song, watched the rabbits run around and picked some flowers for his mother. Suddenly, the sky got dark and heavy rain began to fall. Hans felt scared and started to run. Just then, he heard the sound of water flowing away .He looked around carefully, and then noticed a very small hole in the dike.

Hans felt frightened because he knew what could happen. The small hole could get bigger and bigger. Then the dike could burst and flood Holland. Hans knew what to do. He put his finger into the hole, so no more water cold come through it. “Please, someone help me!” Hans shouted. But there was no one to help him. After a while, he began to feel very cold and tired, but he could not leave the dike. All night long, Hans waited and waited…

The next morning, a priest walked by and heard Hans’ cries. “I am trying to stop the water,” the boy said. “Can you help me?” the priest called some other people and they quickly mended the hole. Finally, they took Hans home. Everyone was very proud of that brave boy.
