2. While-reading activities: Read the text. Write out all the unfamiliar words from the text. Learn them. Welcome to London!
London is full of things to see and do. Some of the world’s most famous places are right here and ready to be explored.
King’s Cross is one of London’s most famous train station. Every day, thousands of people come here to catch trains to places all over the city. The station is full of busy workers hurrying to their jobs, and excited tourists visiting London. Departure boards tell you which train is next and if it’s on time. The lost property office looks after things people leave behind by accident. The morning rush is the busiest time of the day. You can buy a ticket to any place from here. For example, to Hampton court, where King Henry VIII lived around 500 years ago. Now anyone can visit this place. It has a huge maze to explore in the grounds. Except Hampton Court, you can go to Stratford where the Olympic Games were held in 2012. Now it has been turned into a huge park with a great adventure playground. One more place to go from here is Wembley – the place where an important football matches are played. You may see lots of fans on their way to big game. And the most exciting route from King’s Cross is to Paris! The Eurostar train goes through an undersea tunnel all the way to France. It travels at 320 km/h.
Tower of London is nearly 1000 years old. It has been a palace and a prison, but now it’s a fascinating museum. The Tower of London was a prison for over 500 years. The oldest part is the White Tower. In medieval times, the king and queen lived here. They hosted great banquets for knights and noblemen. There is also the Jewel House where the Crown Jewels are kept. One of the most popular sightseeing here is the ravens. There is a legend which says that if there aren’t at least six ravens at the Tower, it will collapse. The guards known as “Beefeaters” lead tours for all who wants to see the Tower inside.
Not far from the Tower of London there is the Tower Bridge. Tower Bridge was built in 1894. Tourists can go up to the top by lifts. Each tower is 65 m tall. It opens to allow tall ships and small boats through by the river. The boats chug up and down the River Thames, which flows through the heart of London. The Thames is England’s longest river, stretching 346 km. Lots of fish live in the river. Hundreds of years ago, winters were much colder and the river froze over. It was thick enough for “frost fairs” to be held on the ice. One more famous bridge over the river is Westminster Bridge. It was built in 1862. It’s painted green to match the seats in the House of Commons. Millions of people walk or drive over it every year. All in all, there are 33 bridges along the Thames in London. Thames River Police patrol the water.
The London Eye is a huge Ferris wheel next to the river Thames. It takes 30 minutes to go all the way round. From bird’s eye panorama you can see the St. Paul’s Cathedral. It was built 300 years ago. An earlier version was destroyed by the Great Fire of London in 1666. The dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral is one of the largest in the world. Sometimes, important people have weddings or funerals at St. Paul’s. 2000 people can attend the service. You can see tombs of famous people in the underground crypt.
Going down the river on the boat you are passing by one of the outstanding places of interest – the Houses of Parliament. This is the seat of British government. A British flag flies when politicians are hart work inside. There are two towers in the House of Parliament:
the Victoria tower and the Clock tower, also known as Big Ben.
There are lots more things to see and do in London. Just come and enjoy your stay!
