Topic: Jazz Chants. To be. Present Continuous.
Age of the students: 11-15.
Objectives:
Materials: handouts, record
21st century skills involved: creativity, imagination, communication, flexibility
Procedures: A Jazz Chant is a rhythmic expression of spoken English. It is based on a combination of repetition. Initially, the students should repeat the lines of the chant following a model provided by the teacher and/or the record. Once the students are familiar with the material, they should progress from a simple choral repetition of a phrase to giving a group response in answer to a question or statement. This step introduces an important new element as the class is now engaged in a dialogue with the teacher. This dialogue may then be transformed into a three- or four-part exchange.
A student can easily memorize any material if you present it with rhythm. The brain loves music but you can also work simply with clapping, stamping and simple body movement.
Activity evaluation: informal, self and peer assessment
