John Sidney Mc. Cain III was born on August 29, 1936, in the Panama Canal Zone. The son and grandson of U. S. Navy admirals, Mc. Cain graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1958 and then served in the navy as a pilot..

In 1967, during the Vietnam War, the North Vietnamese captured him after his plane was shot down over Hanoi. He was released in 1973. He spent over five years as a prisoner of war, enduring difficult conditions and torture. Having earned a number of service awards, including the Silver Star and the Legion of Merit, he retired from the navy in 1981.

Political Career. In 1977 he became the navy’s liaison to the U. S. Senate, which he later called his “real entry into the world of politics and the beginning of my second career as a public servant.” 

In 1982 he was elected to the House of Representatives. After serving two terms, he successfully ran for a seat in the U. S. Senate in 1986. Despite his years in captivity in Vietnam, Mc. Cain strongly advocated restoring diplomatic relations with that country, finally achieved in 1995. 

Mc. Cain was known for his willingness to work with members of both political parties. He believed in finding common ground and solving problems together.

In 2000 Mc. Cain ran for the Republican presidential nomination, competing against  George W. Bush.

Bush prevailed after a strenuous fight. In 2007 Mc. Cain announced that he would once again seek the Republican presidential nomination.

In mid-July 2017, following surgery to remove a blood clot over Mc. Cain’s left eye, it was announced that Mc. Cain was suffering from glioblastoma, a common but extremely malignant brain tumour.

“I made a small place for myself in the story of America and the history of my times.”In the farewell message that he left to be shared after his death, Mc. Cain wrote We weaken our greatness when we confuse our patriotism with tribal rivalries that have sown resentment and hatred and violence in all the corners of the globe. We weaken it when we hide behind walls rather than tear them down, when we doubt the power of our ideals, rather than trust them to be the great force for change they have always been.…Do not despair of our present difficulties but believe always in the promise and greatness of America, because nothing is inevitable here. Americans never quit. We never surrender. We never hide from history. We make history.

No American politician was stronger on Ukraine and tougher on Russia than Mc. Cain... Ukraine was one of his great foreign policy passions.

His last visit to Ukraine came on New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, 2016, when he spent time with Ukrainian troops in Mariupol, 800 kilometers southeast of Kyiv.

On March 9, 2017, the Kyiv Post named him “Ukraine’s Friend of the Week,” not for anything specific that week so much as his long history of support for Ukraine. On Feb. 22, 2015, appearing on CBS-TV’s “Face the Nation,” he said America should be doing more. “I’m ashamed of my country. I’m ashamed of my president. And I’m ashamed of myself that I haven’t done more to help these people. It is really, really heartbreaking.”

Mc. Cain was admired for his courage, integrity, and dedication to serving his country. John Mc. Cain's life teaches us the importance of courage, perseverance, and serving others. He showed that even in difficult times, it's possible to make a positive impact and work towards a better future.
