In 1967, during the Vietnam War, the North Vietnamese captured him after his plane was shot down over Hanoi. He was released in 1973. He spent over five years as a prisoner of war, enduring difficult conditions and torture. Having earned a number of service awards, including the Silver Star and the Legion of Merit, he retired from the navy in 1981.

Political Career. In 1977 he became the navy’s liaison to the U. S. Senate, which he later called his “real entry into the world of politics and the beginning of my second career as a public servant.”

In 1982 he was elected to the House of Representatives. After serving two terms, he successfully ran for a seat in the U. S. Senate in 1986. Despite his years in captivity in Vietnam, Mc. Cain strongly advocated restoring diplomatic relations with that country, finally achieved in 1995.
