Learning outcomes: by the end of the lesson students will be able to

  • describe the place they visit;
  • express their feelings about the place;
  • persuade others to accept their point of view;
  • use proper tenses to describe situations.

Main social issues:

  • Civic responsibility;
  • Health and safety.

Equipment: textbook Enterprise 3 (Express Publishing), board, flashcards (types of holidays, pictures), CD player, CD track 12

Outline

I. Warming-up:

1. Greetings. Class routine

2. T: Why do people travel? While answering use the prompts written on the board.

                                                                                    for pleasure

                       Reasons for travelling               on business

                                                                                    on expedition

                                                                                    to study

    S1: People travel because they want to explore the world.

    T: Where do you usually go on holiday?

    S2: I usually go to the seaside.

II. Language Development

  1. Describe the picture (Ex.6, p.15) covering the following:

location, weather, view, activities, people’s feelings (written on the board)

  1. Give the opposites to the words written on the board:

fabulous, quiet, clear, friendly, delicious, enjoyable

  1. Write a passage replacing the words with their synonyms (Ex.6, p.15)

III. Listening Time

  1. Listen to the dialogue (EX.7, p.15) and make notes.
  2. Act out similar dialogues trying to persuade your partner to go with you on a holiday.

IV. Reading for specific information

  1. Read the extracts (Ex.8, p.15) and underline the odd word out from the words in bold.
  2. Say which words were used to describe:
  • weather;
  • place;
  • feelings.
  1. Say which extracts match the pictures (Ex.8, p.15)

V. Grammar in Use

     1.  Revision of the verb forms in Past Simple/Past Continuous – Present Perfect/ Present Perfect Continuous and their identifiers.

     2.  Match the sentences with the situations they describe (Ex.10, p.16).

     3.  Use the depicted situations to practice the rule (Ex.11, p.16).

     4.  Write sentences using the proper verb form (WB Ex. 6,7, pp. 10-11)

VI. Summing-Up

  1. Challenging feedback

T: Complete my phrase: at the lesson we’ve learnt how to…

S1, S2: describe a place; express our feelings, persuade other to accept our ideas; uses proper tenses.

  1. Evaluating students’ contribution.
  2. Homework: 1) Eco tourism (speaking, 1 min talk), 2) Make up sentences using the following words: quest house, go scuba diving, gorgeous, put on weight. Past Simple/Past Continuous – Present Perfect/ Present Perfect Continuous should be used.
