“Brain Ring”

 

Тема: Holidays of the USA and the UK

 Цілі заходу:

Практична: Закріпити вживання вже відомого лексичного матеріалу, удосконалювати навички читання, аудіювання, діалогічного і монологічного мовлення

Загальноосвітня: Поглибити лексичний запас учнів.

Розвиваюча: розвивати мовну здогадку та готовність до участі в іншомовному спілкуванні, удосконалити мовні здібності, розвивати кмітливість учнів.

Виховна: виховувати в учнів культуру спілкування, формувати уважність та активність учнів.

Procedure.

Compere 1: Dear guests, teachers and students! We are glad to greet you here! We have gathered together to hold a “Brain Ring” contest.

 

Compere 2: The subject of our today’s game is Holidays of the USA and the UK . Two teams are going to compete today. And at the end of our contest we will find out which team knows holidays and traditions better!

 

Compere 1: Of course, you know much about these countries from books, newspapers and TV programs. Your teachers told you much about it. But today we’ll get some more information about holidays, culture and historical events. We wish you to have a nice time at our “Brain Ring” contest!

 

Compere 2: You’ll be given different tasks concerning the topic we were supposed to acquaint with during our previous practical lessons. But first of all let us introduce our two teams.

 

Compere 1: Each team will have its own colour. We give you ribbons and, please, put it on your arms or heads! So, teams have introduced themselves and now we will have the 1 Round, which is called “Quiz. What do you know about British and American holidays?”

 

Round 1. “Quiz. What do you know about British and American holidays?”

Compere 2: Your task is to answer the questions about the holidays in the USA and the United Kingdom. Don’t cry out the answers or they wouldn’t be counted. Raise your hand to give the correct answer. If your answer is correct the team will get one point. After listening to the question the members of the team can consult with each other for 30 sec.

  1. Why does Norway give the present to Britain? What is this present? ( the Christmas Tree, a gratitude for help in the WWII)
  2.  What is the first present on Christmas in Scotland and why? ( a lump of coal, It brings good luck)
  3. When is it common to burn a ship? (In Scotland, on Up – Helly -Aa)
  4. When can girls invite the boys to the party? (on the 29th of February)
  5. When can you change roles with your boss? (on the April Fools’ Day)
  6. What hunting does the President take part every year? (on Easter in America)
  7. Whom do people commemorate on the Memorial Day in the USA? (People remember people who died in the wars)
  8. The sunrise ceremony is the central idea of this day. What is this holiday and when is it celebrated? (on the 24th of July, the Midsummer’s Day)
  9. This holiday symbolizes the birth of the new nation (the 4th  of July)
  10. When can you see a lot of strange old cars? (the first Sunday in November, Ve3teran Car rally)
  11. When do people thank the God for all good things in their lives? (Thanksgiving day, the USA)
  12. What holiday is dedicated to the Scottish patron? (St. Andrew’s Day, the UK, November, 30)
  13. What holiday is celebrated on different days in different countries? (Christmas)
  14. It is one of the most favourite holidays among the children and adults in the USA? (Halloween)
  15. What day are fires lit to evict evil? (the Midsummer’s Day)
  16. What months are the Mother’s and the Father’s Day in the USA? (May and June)

Compere 1: Ok, now we will have the Round № 2, which is called “Crossword. Hidden Holiday”. You have two minutes to look through this crossword and then you are to find as many holidays as you can, name them and cross the on the board.

Compere 1.Now we’ll going to find out what team knows the holidays and traditions of the UK better.

 Compere 2. You’ll be given the table with holidays and their traditions, you should match the holiday with its tradition. Who will be the first and more accurate will be the winner

Round 5. “Captain’s contest”

Compere 2:  Each captain will be asked 3 questions about the American holiday. If the answer is correct, the team will get 1 point. If it is not, the other captain will have the right to answer and if she answers correctly, the team will get 2 points. So, let’s start!

  2. b). Families and friends celebrate this day. Every town and every city has parades, games and sports with prizes. On that day 1776 the USA became independent from England. the 4th of July
  3. This is the biggest holiday of the year. Many people enjoy it most of all and say this is the main holiday of the year. The president gives his speech on TV. Parents tell their children that Santa Claus will come to their house at night and leave presents for them.

  1. This is one of the most favourite holidays of the year. Children dress up, shout “Trick or treat”. Get sweets, fruit, cakes and people have pumpkins with candles in their windows.
  2. You can see the American flag everywhere on this day. People honour the man who was the discoverer of their country.
  3. c). On this day students and pupils read about George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and other American presidents.
