Hand Turkeys

Materials

1 sheet of white paper

colored pencils or markers

Instructions

  1. Place one hand on the sheet of paper. Make sure your fingers are spread apart. Place your pencil or marker on one side of your wrist, then trace around your hand until you reach the other side of your wrist.
  2. Connect the two ends of the line to finish the body of your turkey. Draw another line underneath the fingers to create its feathers. Color the body of the turkey brown and the feathers different colors.
  3. Color a small black circle near the end of the thumb to make the turkey’s eye. Below the eye, on the outside of the thumb, draw two circles (to make the turkey’s wattle). On the tip of the thumb, draw one triangle for the beak.
  4. In the middle of the turkey, draw a wing. To make the feet, draw two straight lines at the bottom of the turkey. At the end of each line, draw three more small lines.
  5. Add anything else you want—a hat on your turkey, grass, the sun, clouds, etc.
  6. Write “Happy Thanksgiving” on your picture. Then, write down three things that you are thankful for. (“I am thankful for...”)
  7.

Station 3: Games

Gym (15 min.)

  • “Category Tag”
  • “Chicken, Chicken, Turkey”

“Thanksgiving is a holiday all about food! The most important Thanksgiving food is the turkey. Vegetables are also very important—especially potatoes, corn, and green beans. Americans also love to eat bread rolls and pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving. Let’s review the names of these foods one more time.”

“Category Tag”

Have the students create a short “shopping list” with 3 or 4 Thanksgiving items. Then select two students to be the “shoppers.” They will come stand in the middle of the room. The other students will stand in a line against one of the walls. Go along the line and quietly assign each student one thing from the list. After this, the shoppers call out one of the items from the list. After this, the shoppers call out one of the items on the list. Every student who was told that item must run across the room and touch the other wall without being tagged. If they are tagged, they become a shopper too. The shoppers call out another item on the list and that group of students must try to run across the room. This continues until all the students have become shoppers.

“Chicken, Chicken, Turkey”

This is a Thanksgiving variation of a well known game called “Duck, Duck, Goose.” Have the students sit in a circle. Choose one student to be the “turkey.” This student walks around the outside of the circle, tapping every student on the head and saying “chicken.” Whenever the turkey wants, they can say “turkey” instead of “chicken.” The new turkey must stand up and chase the old turkey around the circle. If the old turkey runs around the circle and sits in the empty place without being tagged, the student left standing is the new turkey. If the old turkey gets tagged, the other student resumes their place in the circle and the turkey must go around the circle again.
