Task 2 – Places of Interest in Dnipro
Read the text, ask and answer the questions.
Dnipro is the 4th city by population in Ukraine. It has survived many revolutions and changes: from being the third capital of the Russian Empire (after Moscow and St. Petersburg) to becoming Ekaterinoslav, Dnipropetrovsk and, finally, Dnipro. The city will surprise tourists with its sights.
The 18th century Transfiguration Cathedral in the historical heart of the city and has huge architectural and artistic value. The construction of the cathedral reflects the techniques and traditions of the Russian classical school. In 1787, Empress Catherine the Great herself laid the foundation stone. The façade is decorated with a mosaic of the Transfiguration of the Lord.
It might be confusing, but on the mainland beside the river and opposite Monastyrsky Island there is a beautiful park named after Taras Shevchenko. This green space holds the oldest building in the city. Neoclassical palace was constructed in the 1790s, but Potemkin never got to stay in it as he died suddenly in 1791. The palace has gone through a lot of changes over the last two centuries, including a fire in the Second World War. But it was quickly restored to become Dnipro’s “Student House”, which has a busy calendar of events and exhibitions if you’d like to see inside.
The Dnipro children's railroad was opened in 1936. It was based exclusively on children's drawings and sketches. In fact, it is the first children's railroad in Ukraine and the second in the world. The locomotive and 6 cars were built before the station was opened. One of them still stands in the park as a monument. The railway is a place not only for children's entertainment and leisure, but also for the educational program for young railway men. They work as conductors, engineers, operators, duty stations, trainers and even train drivers.
