Canada

Canada, federated country of North America, a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, bounded on the north by the Arctic Ocean; on the north-east by Baffin Bay and Davis Strait, which separate it from Greenland; on the east by the Atlantic Ocean; on the south by the United States; and on the west by the Pacific Ocean and the US state of Alaska. It was formerly known as the Dominion of Canada. Canada is the largest country in the American continent and the second largest country in the world. Its area is 9,976,185 square kilometres. Area

Population It has population of 27 million. Most of the population are descended from European immigrants: 45% from British and Irish ancestors, 29% from French ancestors, 6% from German ancestors. Only 1.5 % of today’s population are descended from the original Eskimo and India inhabitants.

History Britain and France fought over Canada for nearly two hundred years. Finally in 1763 Britain took control. Canada got full independence in 1931. It is now an independent country with its own prime minister, but the head of state is still the British Queen. The country is a member of the Commonwealth. Queen Elizabeth II is the head of the Commonwealth and the Queen of Canada but only formally.

Languages Canada is bilingual country. The majority of the population speak English. In 2006, about 17.4% of the population were able to conduct a conversation in both official languages.   English – 57.8%   English and French (Bilingual) – 17.4%   French – 22.1%

Cities Most French speakers live in the province of Quebec. Canada’s largest city is Toronto. It has a population of 3.800.000. But Toronto is not the capital city. The capital is Ottawa in the province of Ontario. Ottawa Toronto

The Great Lakes The Great Lakes are a chain of freshwater lakes located in eastern North America, on the Canada United States border. Consisting of Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario, they form the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth. They are sometimes referred to as the “Third Coast” by some citizens of the United States. Because of their size, some regard them as inland seas. Canada is a huge country. Its longest river, the Mackenzie, flows for 1.600 km into the Arctic Ocean.

Industries Canada is also a very rich country. It has many industries (cars, electrical goods, etc.). It produces almost every mineral (gold, silver, iron, copper, uranium, oil, coal, etc.). Canada is the world’s biggest producer of nickel, the second biggest producer of zinc and the third biggest producers of wood and paper (44% of the land is forest). Agriculture (mostly wheat and cattle) is important, too.

Symbols of Canada The symbols of Canada are a maple leaf and syrup, a Canadian beaver, a loon and a Canadian goose.
