Natural disasters

Every year different natural disasters happen in our planet. Earthquake Hurricane Tornado Volcano eruption Flood Drought Wildfire

They destroy cities and towns, injure people and animals.

An earthquake is a sudden shaking of the ground. It usually happens in Japan, China, India, the USA, Armenia, Portugal.

A hurricane is a very violent wind or storm. It usually happens in Japan, China, the Russian Federation, the Philippines.

A tornado is a very violent wind in the form of a funnel of air that spins at great speed. It usually happens in the USA.

A volcano is a mountain with a hole called a crater in the top. Sometimes lava and gases are thrown from the crater. It usually happens in Italy, Salvador, Hawaii, the Russian Federation.

Floods are the result of prolonged rainfall from a storm, rapid melting of large amounts of snow, or rivers which rise up their levels of water.

A drought is defined as an extended period of abnormally dry weather that causes water shortages and crop damage. A drought starts when total rainfall is well below average for several months. Other signs of drought include: unusually low river flows, low groundwater and reservoir levels, very dry soil, reduced crop yields or even crop failure, and algae blooms in reservoirs and lakes.

A wildfire is an uncontrolled fire in an area of combustible vegetation that occurs in the countryside or a wilderness area

An avalanche is a massive slide of snow, ice, rock or debris down a mountainside. Provoked by an earth tremor, extreme precipitation or man-made disturbances (such as a loud noise or the heavy movement of a skier or snowboarder).

A tsunami is a huge ocean wave that can travel at speeds up to 600 mi/hr (965 km/hr), hundreds of miles over open sea before it hits land. Sometimes incorrectly called a tidal wave, a tsunami is usually caused by an earthquake, volcanic eruption or coastal landslide.
