Christmas Traditions

Christmas is my favorite holiday, it’s a feast of Christ’s birth.  In Ukraine we believe that how you celebrate Christmas, so you will spend the year. Christmas is celebrated on the night of the 6th of January. I celebrate it at home with my family.

We start preparing for Christmas in the morning. I help Mom prepare a delicious supper of 12 meatless dishes Such as: kutya, varenyki, holubtsi, baked fish,uzvar and other delicious dishes

On the evening of January 6, our whole family gathers at the festive table. This evening is called Holy Evening. We don't give each other gifts, because everything has already been given for the New Year. Everyone sits down to eat kutya first, and then other dishes. As a whole family, we remember the deceased relatives, and the grandmother puts a separate plate with kutya, as if for them.

Then I go caroling with my friends. Mom doesn't allow us to go out late, so І do it before the holiday supper. We come to people we know and sing carols about the baby Jesus, about the Mother of God, the lambs and the first star in the sky. We say that joy has come to Earth because Jesus Christ was born.
