The Past Perfect Tense. We use the Past Perfect Tense: 1) For an action which was finished before a specific point in the past. She had read that book by last Saturday.

The Past Perfect Tense2) For an action which was completed before another action or event in the past. She had already eaten dinner when he arrived.

The Past Perfect Tense3) For an action that is the cause of the subsequent action or state in the past. The room was dirty. I hadn’t cleaned it for weeks.

The Past Perfect Tense Time markers: already just before, before the moment till/until after when/while by … (by 5 o’clock, by evening, by that month, by Monday) by the time

The Past Perfect Tensehad + V3 / V-ed had – auxiliary verb V3 – the third form of the irregular main verb V-ed –regular main verb with the ending -ed

The Past Perfect Tense. Affirmative Form. S had + V3 / V-ed … … . He had done all his work by 7 o’clock.

The Past Perfect Tense. Negative Form. S had not+ V3 / V-ed … … . He had not washed up before Max came. had not = hadn’t

The Past Perfect Tense. Interrogative Form. Had S + V3 / V-ed … … ?Had he played by 6 o’clock?
