William Shakespeare

Many outstanding people gave England to the world, but the most known of them is William Shakespeare. He was a famous English poet and playwright. Shakespeare wrote at least 38 plays and over 150 short and long poems, many of which are considered to be the finest ever written in English.

His father was a businessman and the town's mayor. His mother came from a family that owned land near Stratford. William had three younger brothers and two younger sisters. At the age of 18 he married Anne Hathaway and they had three children. William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in a small English city Stratford-upon-Avon.

His most famous works include such plays as «Romeo and Juliet», «Hamlet», «King Lear», «Othello», and many others. In his works, Shakespeare did not just use language to express thoughts, but explored it, gave meaning to every word, own words.

William Shakespeare introduced over one and a half thousand new lexical units, forming new words. Shakespeare's first plays were staged at 1592, which suggests that he was already famous in his 30s.

When the Black Death spread across England, many public places were closed. When the theatres opened up again in 1594 Shakespeare joined the best acting company of the country – Lord Chamberlain's Men. It had the best actors, the best writers and the most famous theatre – the Globe.

Shakespeare`s plays can be put into three big categories: 1. Tragedies are plays that show the downfall of a main character. His most famous tragedies are«Hamlet»«King Lear»  «Macbeth»

2. Comedies are funny plays that have a happy ending most of the time.  «A Midsummer Night's Dream»«As You Like It»«The Merry Wives of Windsor»are among the most popular.

3. Historical plays are dramas about the lives of some of England's most powerful kings like Henry IV or Richard II.

William Shakespeare died in 1616 in his native town Stratford. But his language and literature remain in demand to this day. Many people learn English in order to read Shakespeare in the original.
