The procedure of the presentation

Teacher: Dear children, guests, teachers!
You’re welcome to the world of wild animals. We’d like to present you the animals,
that are endangered, vulnerable or extinct in the world and on the territory of Ukraine.
It’s a great pity but every year approximately 150 species of animals in the world are
extinct.
At our English lessons we discussed this problem and we wanted to know more about
the wild life of Ukraine. That’s why we started our project in September.
slide 2 So, our project is called “The animals in the Red Book of Ukraine”.
Teacher: What are the objectives of our project?
slide 3 (list of objectives)
Teacher: While working on this project the pupils learned a lot of new thematic words.
What are they? Let’s read them.
slide 4 (list of thematic words)
Teacher: While working at the project the pupils got acquaintance with some quotations of famous
people about nature, about interrelations of a human and animals. What are they?
slide 5 (quotations)
Pupil 1 The greatness of the nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.
To understand whether animals have a soul, you need to have a soul.
Pupil 2 An animal’s eyes have the power to speak a great language.
I believe in animal rights, and high among them is the right to the gentle stroke
of a human hand.
Teacher: There are some interesting proverbs about animal world.
slide 6 (proverbs)
Pupil 3 A lion sleeps in the heart of every courageous person.
A good horse cannot be of a bad color.
A champion bull begins from birth.
A bird never flew on one wing.
Teacher: Do you know any general information about Ukrainian fauna?
Pupil 4 I have some information.
slide 7 The animal world of Ukraine is exciting because of its territory, and the territory of
Ukraine is fantastic because of its fauna zones: vast forests, great steppes, magnificent
mountains and picturesque natural water pools. These natural zones give home for more
than 45 000 species of animals.
The most common predators are wolves, foxes, wildcats, martens, deer, wild pigs
and elks.
Teacher: Is it really that almost every day, in some parts of the world a species of plant or animal
becomes extinct, it dies out and disappears for ever?
Pupil 5 It’s a great pity but it is horrible reality. Wildlife is in danger.
Video film: Extinct animals
Pupil 6: Every day there are more and more animals and plants which are in danger of extinction.
Their natural habitats are destroyed by human activity. Land is cleared of forests for
farming or housing. During the last 400 years, more than 300 mammals and bird species
have died out.
You will never see the white wolf, the elephant bird, the dodo and other wild animals.
Isn’t it terrible?
Pupil 7: There is some more information that can make people in the world think about our future
and the animal world.
slide 8
the farmers.
slide 9
Pupil 8
Teacher: Isn’t it terrible, horrible? Shall people think about the environment?
Pupil 9 Certainly. One day people will think on this problem.
slide 10 The poem “Only when”
Teacher: What is the way to save animals for future generations?
Pupil 10 … to keep some of them in captivity. Captivity – when an animal is kept in a special
place and can’t go where it wants.
Teacher: What are the places where animals are not in danger but live safe?
slide 11 – 13
Pupil 11 Animals are not in danger at the Zoos, in Safari parks, in National parks
and in National Reserves.
Teacher: Which of these places can be found in our country?
Have you ever visited them?
Pupil 12 I have been only to the Zoo but I’d like to tell about Askania-Nova.
It’s Ukrainian Wild Nature Reserve.
slide 14
In the19th century a German colony Ascania-Nova appeared in Tavria (now Cherkassk area) where one of the owners Baron Friedrich Eduardovich von Falz-Fein (1863-1920), who was fond of zoology from an early age, created a zoo and a botanical garden in the middle of the steppe. In 1887 he created the first artesian well in Southern Ukraine. The year after, the residents of the Baron’s zoo (bear, deer, roe, hare and 32 species of birds) were joined by such animals as three antelopes, some kangaroos and two ostriches Nandu.
Friedrich Falz - Fein, the great nature and animal lover created the steppe oasis – a “small paradise” that became a well-known shelter for animals all over the world.
Only 5 more reserves of such kind exist in the world. A lot of animals and birds living in the reserve are on the list of the Red Book.
slide 15
Pupil 13
In 1919, Askania-Nova was proclaimed a national park. Here, you can see Saiga and Oryx antelopes, American bison and Andean llamas, Shetland ponies and Kudu antelope, African water buffalo and zebras. The pride of the reserve is herds of Przewalski’s horses. It is also a paradise for birds: swans, flamingos, larks, partridges and cranes – the total of 270 species of birds live here.
Travel there and see the unique collection of animals – 2,250 species from Africa, India, North and South America that feel comfortable.
Teacher: A great number of endangered animals are included in the Red Book of Ukraine.
When did the Red Book of Ukraine appear?
slide 16
Pupil 14
The Red Book of Ukraine – annotated and illustrated list of rare animal species that are endangered in Ukraine, and which are to be protected.
The first Red Book on Ukrainian flora and fauna was published in 1980. The first edition contained a description of 85 species of animals.
The second edition of the Red Book was released in 1994 after Ukraine gained independence and it numbered 382 animal species.
In 2009 the third edition of the Red Book of Ukraine came out. It listed 542species.
The book also contains maps and photos (pictures) of plant and animal species included in it.
Teacher: What kinds of animals are in the Red Book?
slide 17 They are: mammals – 68 species , insects – 226 species, fish – 69 species, reptiles –
11species.
Teacher: The pupils prepared information about animals from the Red Book of Ukraine.
Let’s listen to them. (pupils’ presentations)
slides 18 – 33
Teacher: Are there any world organizations to protect animals?
slide 34
Pupil 15
Certainly there are. There are some International organizations which help animals all over the world.
RSPCA – the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a police force for animals. The RSPCA also provides a reserve for homeless animals and runs many animal hospitals.
WWF – the World Wildlife Fund is the most famous international organization which helps endangered species. The fund organizes events to protect animals that face extinction.
. The organization has over thirty years of experience and is very successful.
WSPA – the World Society for the Protection of Animals aims to prevent cruelty and mistreatment of animals or pets. It works forty years and has offices in over 70 countries. It protects mostly the lost cats and dogs.
Teacher: What must we do to save the wildlife in Ukraine?
slide 35
Pupils: We must …
slide # 36 create National Parks to preserve animals which are on the brink of extinction
slide # 37 create animal reserves to keep and save animals that are on the list in the Red Book
in order to increase their population
slide # 38 stop hunting and killing the animals because of their skin, meat and fur for food,
for clothes or just for fun. Stop the cruelty, stop the abuse, stop the slaughter.
slide # 39 stop destruction of the habitat of animals
slide # 40 not sale animals’ skin and fur, replace them with artificial kinds of things
slide # 41 open Zoos to preserve and save rare species of animals
Teacher: Our presentation of the project has come to its end. We hope it was interesting and useful.
