Topic: Charity fundraising events

Aims:

  • To predict the content of the text, to read for specific info, to consolidate new vocabulary
  • To develop students’ ability to read and extract the main points of a text about charities
  • To give students practice of discussing and planning a charity fundraising event

Цель урока: Обобщить знания учащихся по теме «Благотворительность».

Задачи урока:

  • 1.Активизировать применение полученных знаний  лексики и грамматики  в рамках изучаемой темы.
  • 2.Научить применять полученные знания по изученной теме в других учебных ситуациях.
  • 3.Развивать коммуникативные умения учащихся в области говорения, аудирования, чтения.

 

Level: B1

Length of lesson: 45 minutes

This lesson is about charities and fundraising activities, with a strong focus on the valuable work of different charity organizations. It includes a general discussion about charities, a reading about fundraising events and a discussion on organizing a fundraising event in our class.

Procedure

1. Warmer (5 – 7 minutes)

Write the word ‘charity’ on the board and make sure everyone understands what it means. Then brainstorm a list of charities and write them on the board. You may need to research the names of a few charities to help the students.

Write these questions on the board and ask learners to discuss them in pairs.

Why do people give money to charities?

Which charities are the most popular in your country?

2. Reading the text Ex 1 p 52 SB (15  minutes)

Pre-reading task: Whiteboard (matching)

Reading: Scanning – Vocabulary - Discussion

     Divide the class into groups of more-or-less equal numbers and give each group copies of one of the text. Learners should read the information about their charity and make sure they understand the meaning of all of the words and phrases. If necessary, they should look them up in a dictionary or discuss them with their group.

     Learners then discuss which points they should highlight about their charity when they try to convince their colleagues that it deserves the donation. They should try to guess arguments against their charity and share ideas for counter arguments.

7. Discuss and select a fundraising activity in the class(5 mins)

  • Select an activity they would like to organize to raise funds for the Trust (real or hypothetical,

depending on their level of interest).

  • Give out flipchart paper to make notes on, including the activity, time, date, place and

who does what. Write these up on the board.

8. Conclusion (5 mins)

  To conclude, have a class vote for the most worthy charity to receive the donation.
