-
Defining Relative Clauses (Означальні підрядні речення)
-
Defining clauses
-
Найчастіше починаються з відносних займенників who, which, that, whose, where, when.
-
The man who is wearing a red hat is my uncle.
-
I have a book that explains everything about grammar.
-
The city where I was born is beautiful.
-
Who — хто. (Використовується для опису людей): The woman who works here is nice.
-
Which — котрий, який. (Використовують для речей або тварин): The car which is parked outside belongs to my friend.
-
That — що. The book that you gave me is amazing.
-
Whose — чий. (Для вказівки на приналежність): The boy whose father is a doctor is my classmate.
-
Where – де (Місце)
-
When – коли (Час)
Ми можемо упустити слова who, which, that якщо вони стосуються додатку в реченні (якщо після цих слів стоять особа): Those are the people (who) we met.
2. Non-defining Relative Clauses (Неозначені підрядні речення)
Non-defining clauses
-
Non-defining clauses
-
Вони також часто починаються з відносних займенників who, which, whose, where, when.
-
My mother, who is very kind, helps me every day.
-
Paris, which is known for its art and culture, is a great place to visit.
-
My brother, whose name is John, is a musician.
-
Who — хто. (Для людей): Tom, who lives in London, is my friend.
-
Which — який, котрий. (Для речей або тварин): The book, which I bought yesterday, is interesting.
-
Whose — чий. (Для вказівки на приналежність): Jane, whose father is a teacher, is very smart.
-
Where – де (Місце)
-
When – коли (Час)

-
That vs. Which: У defining relative clauses часто використовується that, хоча which теж можливий.
-
The book that/which you gave me is very interesting.
- defining relative clause
-
This book, which you gave me, is very interesting.
- non-defining clause
-
-
The town where I live is small.
-
The time when we met was unforgettable.
"That" більше уточнює, ніж "which".
-
Defining clause (обов’язкова інформація, уточнює об'єкт):
-
The car that is parked outside belongs to my brother.
Non-defining clause (додаткова, не обов’язкова інформація):
-
My brother’s car, which is parked outside, is red.
