Summer job

1. I often think what I’ll be doing in 5 years’ time.
2. I’m just about to leave school and enter a university.
3. So sooner or later I have to choose my future career path.
4. I don’t have the slightest idea what job I’d have after university.
5. That was the reason why I decided to go directly into the world of work during summer.
6. I saw (A friend of mine told me about) some part-time and full-time jobs advertised in our local newspaper. (online)
7. I made a list of my strong and weak points to make up my mind what job I’d like to apply for.
8. I believe I have excellent interpersonal skills but I can’t do repetitive work. (I have great organizational skills and go on well with people. I’m patient and can work under pressure. I’m creative but can’t work long hours.)
9. I felt very lucky when I got my first job in a supermarket. (pizza restaurant, a health care center, an office, on a farm, in a shop).
10. I was given a clear plan for a week.
11. I basically did what I was told to do.
12. My job involved looking after kids (printing out letters and also sending them, checking the shelves and continually restocking them, digging the garden and mowing the lawn).
13. I really got on well with my colleagues and they helped me out a lot when I had a problem.
14. But there was a guy who got on my nerves.
15. He was always getting in my way.
16. The first week was a trial week and I simply observed others at work and helped them.
17. To my surprise the job turned to be fascinating and great fun (easy and well-paid, undemanding, boring, badly-paid and very stressful).
18. From my point of view the things I learned are invaluable.
19. My job gave me a taste of real working life and I developed a lot of useful work skills.
20. It’s quite clear to me that it’s a useful experience and I saved money for a new telephone (laptop, ball gown, college expenses, a birthday party, a vacation trip).
