INDEPENDENCE DAY (2)

July 4th or Independence Day, is the most important American holiday. It is the birthday of the United States of America. On this day, in 1776, America signed the Declaration of Independence and started to fight for freedom from British rule.

Before 1776, the King of England, George III, ruled the thirteen colonies in America. The colonists were tired of the taxes that George III imposed on them.

In 1767 the British government placed new taxes on tea and paper that the colonists imported from abroad. The colonists got angry and refused to play. George III sent soldiers to keep order.   

In 1773, a group of colonists dressed up as Indian threw 342 chests of tea belonging to the East India Company into the waters of Boston harbour. King George didn't think it was funny. His reply to this «Boston tea party» was a set of laws to punish the colonists. Boston harbour was closed until the tea was paid for. More soldiers were sent there to keep order.

But the «Intolerable Acts», as colonists called King George's laws, served only to unite the colonies against the British rule. The War of Independence began.

On July 4, 1776  the colonists declared their independence from Britain. Led by Thomas Jefferson the representatives of all thirteen colonies met in Philadelphia to sign the Declaration of Independence. A large part of it was written by Jefferson himself. The document stated that the colonies were now «free and independent states» and officially named them the United States of America. It also said that all men had a natural right to «life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness».

The following day, copies of the Declaration of Independence were distributed and on July 6«The Pennsylvania Evening Post» became the first newspaper to print the extraordinary document. People celebrated the birth of a new nation.

But the War of Independence dragged on until 1783 when the colonists finally won. The head of the Revolutionary army was George Washington, who later became the first President of the United States of America. In 1783 Independence Day was made an official holiday.

Today, the country's birthday is widely celebrated with parades, public meetings, patriotic music and speech- making. There are picnics and barbecues, and in the evening there are big fireworks show. Wherever Americans are around the globe, they will get together for a traditional 4Ul of July celebration!

4 липня, або День незалежності, — найважливіше свято в Америці. Це день народження Сполучених Штатів Америки. У цей день у 1776 р. Америка підписала Декларацію про незалежність і почала боротьбу за свободу від британського управління.

До 1776 р. король Англії Георг III керував тринадцятьма колоніями в Америці. Колоністи втомилися від податків, які Георг III на них накладав.

У 1767 р. британський уряд установив нові податки на чай і папір, які колоністи імпортували з інших країн. Колоністи розсердилися і відмовилися платити. Георг IIIпослав солдат навести порядок.

У 1773 р. група колоністів, які переодяглися індіанцями, викинула 342 шухляди з чаєм, що належав східно-індійській компанії, у води Бостонської гавані. Королю Георгу це смішним не здалося. У відповідь на це «Бостонське чайне свято» він видав указ про покарання колоністів. Бостонська гавань була закрита доти, поки чай не був оплачений. Для підтримки порядку було вислано ще більше солдатів.

Але «нестерпні акти», як колоністи називали закони Георга III, тільки об'єднали колонії проти британського управління. Війна за незалежність почалася.

4 липня 1776 р. колоністи проголосили свою незалежність від Британії. ОчолюваніТомасом Джефферсоном представники всіх тринадцяти колоній зустрілися у Філадельфії, щоб підписати Декларацію про незалежність. Більша частина її була написана самим Джефферсоном. У документі говорилося про те, що колонії — це «вільні і незалежні штати» й офіційно вони називаються Сполученими Штатами Америки. Також говорилося, що всі люди мають природне право на «життя, волю і щастя».

Наступного дня копії Декларації про незалежність були розповсюджені, і 6 липня газета «Вечірня Пенсільванія» стала першою газетою, що надрукувала цей незвичайний документ. Люди святкували народження нової нації.

Але війна за незалежність тривала до 1783 р., поки зрештою колоністи не перемогли. Революційну армію очолював Джордж Вашингтон, який пізніше став першим президентом США. У 1783 р. День незалежності став офіційним святом.

Сьогодні день народження країни відзначається парадами, зборами, патріотичною музикою і промовами. Люди влаштовують пікніки та барбекю, а ввечері — великий салют. Де б не були американці, вони завжди зберуться на святкування 4 липня!
