Play is used with ball sports or competitive games where we play against another person: sports that have teams, rules and competitions. Badminton, baseball, football, golf, rugby and tennis are some examples. e.g. I have been playing tennis for over ten years. |
Go is used used with activities that end -ing. Activities that take 'go' camping, dancing, jogging, running, hiking, riding, swimming, cycling, climbing etc. e.g. We went camping by the lake last summer.

Do is used for a recreational activity or a non-team sport that does not use a ball. Aerobics, athletics, gymnastics, judo, karate and yoga are some examples. e.g. All young children should be encouraged to do gymnastics. .

The game, peculiarly associated with England, is cricket. Many other games are also English in origin, but have been accepted with enthusiasm in other countries. Cricket has been seriously and extensively accepted only in the Commonwealth, particularly in Australia. India, and Pakistan.

Rugby football (or rugger) has existed in Britain since the beginning of the 19th century, when a teacher at Rugby school, while playing football, decided that it would be better to pick up the (5) … and run with it.
