Topic: Travel. By road

Functions: talking about past experience.

Aim:

  • to the end of the lesson Ss should know the vocabulary of the lesson, and use them in oral speech.
  • Describing an accident.
  • Making decisions.

 

 

MATERIALS: To the Top 4a, cd, whiteboard, pictures of cars

PROCEDURE OF THE LESSON

 

Warm up

  • Draw Ss’ attention to the title of the lesson and ask them what it is about.
  • Elicit answers.
  • Ask Ss: Do you travel by car? If yes, how often? If no, how do you get around? Have you ever  learn? Why/why not? How dangerous do you think it is? Do you wear a seat belt? Elicit answers.

Main part

  1. Vocabulary
  1. Ask Ss to read through the words and look at the two pictures.
  • Explain th Ss that they should match the items (1-14) in the pictures with the words.
  • Have Ss do the activity individually or in pairs.
  • Check the answers with the class.

              B.     Ask Ss to read through the phrases and tell you when they are used.

  • Elicit answers.
  • Point out that we you use travel by for all forms of transport but travel in only with car.
  • Ask Ss to read through the sentences 1-3 and explain any unknown words.
  • Have Ss do the activity individually or in pairs.
  • Check the answers with the class.  

  1. Read

A.

  • Ask Ss to read through the statements a-h.
  • Explain to Ss that they should match the statements a-h with the paragraphs 1-6.
  • Tell Ss that they do not need to understand everything in the text in order to do the activity.
  • Point out that there are two extra statements that they do not need to use.
  • Allow Ss some time to do the activity.
  • Check the answers with the class and ask Ss to provide justification.
  • Explain to Ss that the AA (Automobile Association) is an organization in Britain which gives help and information to drivers who are members of it. Also, explain that kmp stands for kilometers per hour.

                B.

  • Ask Ss to read through the questions 1-6 and check understanding.
  • Have Ss do the activity individually or in pairs.
  • Check the answers with the class.

 

 

                C.

  • Ask ss to read through the phrasal verbs 1-6.
  • Explain to them that they should find the phrasal verbs in the texts and match them with the meanings a-f.
  • Have Ss do the activity individually or in pairs.
  • Check the answers with the class.
  • Explain new vocabulary if necessary.

 

  1. Listening

A.

  • Draw Ss’attention to the pictures a-d and ask them what the words mean.
  • Elicit answers and explain any unknown words.
  • Explain to Ss that they will listen to somebody describing an accident and they should tick the actions that happened.
  • Play the CD.
  • Check the answers with the class.

             B.

  • Explain to Ss that they will listen to the account of the accident again and they should decide whether the sentences 1-6 are true or false.
  • Ask Ss to read through the sentences 1-6 and check understanding.
  • Play the CD.
  • Check the answers with the class.

 Conclusion

Speak

  • Ask Ss to talk about their experiences or an accident they have had.
  • Explain to Ss that if they cannot think of anything they have experienced, they can talk about something they have heard of or seen.
  • Encourage Ss to share their stories with the class.
