Who is the head of the United Kingdom? III. MAIN PART. Pre-watching T: Not bad, now I suggest you to watch the film about Great Britain. This film will help you to remind all information you’ve known about this country and get to know more. While watching, please, focus on: Parts of the UK__________________________________________________ Population of the UK______________________________________________ Famous towns and cities ___________________________________________ Number of national parks___________________________________________ Number of tourists, who visit this country every year_____________________ The head of the state__________________________________________________ Post-watching tasks T: So, let’s look at the screen and check up your answers. The British are really very proud of their Queen. Now, look. Here is a small exercise for you. There are some spaces that you are to fill in using the words in brackets. (fifteen, dogs, Britain, one, seven, breakfast) The British are very proud of their Queen. She is also the symbol of _______ like the flag. When the Queen gets up in the morning, _______ people look after her. _______ starts her bath, one prepares her clothes, one feeds the Royal _______. Two people bring her _______ . Every day for _______ minutes a musician plays Scottish music outside her room and the Queen reads The Times. The key: Britain, seven, one, dogs, breakfast, fifteen. T: OK. Let’s imagine that we are in London now. Well, as you know London, is the capital of Great Britain. It's a very big city. London is situated on the river Thames. About 9 ml people live in London. It is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is also a very old city. London is 2000 years old. They say “If a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.” Our guides are already ready to tell you much more information about London. So, let me introduce you our guides. Please, meet__________________________________________________________ But to understand our guides better I suggest you to revise and repeat some words and word combinations after them. Speaking (Slide show) ( a square, a government, a library, an attraction, a clock, a church, a tower, a bell, a bridge, a tunnel, a wax museum, a swimming pool, a royal park, a giant observation wheel) P1: Dear tourists! We start our excursion from Trafalgar Square. It's the most popular place for people to meet. In the middle of the square there is Nelson's Column, which is 51 m. high. P2: Now we are coming to Buckingham Palace. It is the most famous place in London. It is the home of the Queen. There are 600 rooms in it. It has an indoor swimming pool and a cinema. P1: In front of us you can see the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. The Houses of Parliament is the seat of the British government. Big Ben is the huge bell in the clock of Saint Stephen's Tower. It may have been named after Sir Benjamin Hall. The clock strikes every hour and all people of this country take the time from it. P2: Look! This is one of the greatest English churches, St. Paul's Cathedral. The Famous English architect Sir Christopher Wren built it in the 17th century after the Great Fire. It took Sir Christopher Wren 35 years. It is a beautiful building with many columns and towers. In one of its towers there is one of the largest bells in the world. St. Paul's Cathedral is not far from the Tower of London. P1: The Tower of London is the most outstanding link in the chain of the history of the country. William the Conqueror ordered to build it. The Tower of London long continued to be both a fortress and a palace. It was also a prison. Nowadays the Tower is still a prison. Usually, a prison is a place where criminals are locked up. But in this prison the jewels are also locked up. The jewels are the famous "crown jewels" of England. Crown jewels are treasures that belong to king or queen. P2: Westminster Abbey is also full of history. It was founded in 1050 as a monastery, but later it was rebuilt by Henry III. Nearly all the kings and queens of Britain were crowned and buried there. Newton, Darwin, Charles Dickens are buried in the Abbey. One of the treasures of the Abbey is the ancient Coronation Chair and the Stone of Scone upon which Scottish kings were crowned. Westminster Abbey is a symbol of English tradition. P1: And this a museum. Madame Tussauds is a wax museum. It is famous all over the world. There are a lot of kings, queens, politicians and stars. You can see famous people from the past and famous people of today. It is very popular – two million people visit it every year. There are about 4 hundred figures in the museum. P2: Fantastic! And here is the river Thames. London stands on both banks of the river. The Thames is the deepest and the most beautiful river in Britain. There are 27 bridges over the Thames and 8 tunnels under it. A modern but already very popular tourist attraction is the London Eye, a giant observation wheel located on the South Bank of the river Thames. P1: And now we are crossing Tower Bridge over the river Thames. It is one of the oldest and most beautiful bridges in London. It is more than 100 years. P2: Wow! Look. This is St. Jame's Park. It is one of the royal Parks. It is the oldest and the smallest of all royal parks. People like to have a rest in this park. P1: And now you can see the British Museum. It has one of the largest libraries in the world. There are many old books and manuscripts there. T: Thank you for an interesting excursion. You may take your seats. Writing T: Now I’ll see how attentive you were. Find the pairs to the words: • Big London • Tower Ben • Trafalgar Parliament • Buckingham Square • The Houses of Museum • The Tower of Bridge • The British Palace Grammar T: If you were in London what places would you visit? Continue the sentence using the structure Past Indefinite + would: If I were in London I would visit ___________________________________. Relaxation T: Now I propose you to relax and listen to music. You task is to guess what the song and who the singer is. Reading T: Good and bad manners make up the social rules of a country. There are some "Unwritten Rules" of Great Britain. So, Remember! 1. You must not get on bus without waiting your turn in the queen! 2. Be polite! 3. It isn't a bad manner to eat in the street. 4. To make a noise in public places is considered very rude. 5. Don’t gesticulate with your hands and be more restrained in public places. 6. Smoking is banned in London Underground, cinemas, theatres and in someone's house without permission. 7. Don’t forget to take an umbrella with you! Speaking We sometimes say that England is the country where you can have four seasons in one day. Every daily paper publishes a weather forecast. Both the radio and television give the weather forecast several times each day. British people say: "Other countries have a climate, in England we have weather." And it really so.The weather in Britain changes very quickly. One day may be fine and the next day may be wet. The morning may be warm and the evening may be cool. So it is natural for people to use the expression about a person "as changeable as the weather". The English also say that they have three variants of weather: when it rains in the morning, when it rains in the afternoon or when it rains all day long. Sometimes it rains so heavily that they say "It's raining cats and dogs". The best time of the year in England is spring (of course, it rains in spring, too). The two worst months in Britain are January and February. They are cold, wet, and unpleasant. The most unpleasant aspects of the weather in England are fog and smog. The weather is the favourite topic of conversation in Britain. When two Englishmen meet, their first words will be "How are you?" And after the reply "Very well, thank you; how are you?" the next remark is almost certain to be about the weather. When you go abroad be ready to have a talk about the weather. In such a cold weather it is better to drink a cup of tea. In the afternoon, about four o’clock, the English have a cup of tea and a cake, or a slice or two of bread and butter. This time is called afternoon tea. High tea is at 5 o’clock. Tea is accompanied by ham, tomatoes and salad, bread and butter, fruit and cakes. Tea is very popular with the English; it may be called their national drink. The English like it strong and fresh made. Tea must be brewed as follows: one teaspoon for each person and one for the pot. They drink it with or without sugar, but almost always with milk. It is important to pour tea into milk, and not vice versa. Speaking about Britain people usually stress on tea, but I want to show you a short video about what is better to drink with afternoon tea. (VIDEO “AFTERNOON TEA” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RVWJ-EUzZY) Some people criticize English food. They say it’s only fish and chips, bacon and eggs, porridge with milk and toast with marmalade. In most cities in Britain you’ll find Indian, Chinese, French and Italian restaurants. In London you’ll also find Indonesian, Mexican, Greek… Cynics will say that this is because English have no “cuisine” themselves, but this is not quite the true. (VIDEO “FOOD IS GREAT”) IV.
