Валя. Hello dear boys and girls! Teachers and friends!
Валік. We are so glad to see you here today
Валя: It’s so lovely to meet you here, at our Valentine’s party café!
Bалік: I hope that Valentine’s Day will bring you lots of fun!
Валя: “If you want to be loved, then love”, wrote Robert Bills. Being inspired by these words let me open our English feast of love and romance.
Валік: At the very beginning there was love. Composers, poets, artists and writers develop endless love theme as this feeling connects every living creature on the Earth, helps in different times, heat souls. Romantic and tender, shy and passionate, attached and timid… Love can be so different. It can give you happiness and cause pain. Love fills our life with a sense.
Валя: Love is always a shock, opening of great volcano, hidden somewhere deep in us.
Валік: Love is a sacred feeling. And it is worth having its own day and holiday. And this day is February, 14th.
Валя: And so we are here in this language café on this magnificent holiday having great time celebrating St Valentine’s Day.
Валік: Yeah… We are going to celebrate St. Valentine’s Day. No one really knows the origin of it. There are many legends about it.
Валя: Do you know why we celebrate the day of love and lovers on the 14th of February. Let’s go to Rome, to the times of Emperor Claudius.
Валік: According to one this day is connected with an ancient Roman Festival called Lupercalia. This was on February, 15 to honor the patron of husbandry
Валя: The next story tells us that St. Valentine was a priest who married young couples secretly when the Roman Emperor Claudius 2 forbade marriages. He believed that single men were better soldiers.
Валік:.Another story tells us about St. Valentine who was a good friend to children. He was against the Roman Gods and that is why he was put in prison. When he was imprisoned the children brought him loving letters. It was on February, 14. Some people think that is why we give friendly and loving messages to each other on this day.
Валя: Do you know any traditions of celebrating St Valentine’s Day? In England, for example, girls write men names on papers, hid them in clay balls and put into water. The first emerged ball will tell the groom’s name.
Валік: To see the groom in dreams French girls sew the laurel leaves to the pillow on the eve of February 14th.
Валя: Both in the USA and Great Britain every woman gets a bunch of flowers.
Валік: As for me, the most unusual celebration is in Japan. On the 14th of February something strange takes place on the main square in Tokio: some boys and girls, staying on the stage, cry their wishes out and declare in love. The one who was the loudest gets a prize.
Валя: There is such a belief in Sicily: if a young girl stands at the window half an hour before the sunrise on the eve of Valentine's Day, and the first ray falls on her, then she will marry that same year.
Валік: In Germany, girls wrote men's names on bulbs of tulips. What tulip blossoms first - girl gets married that guy.
Валя: In Rome the boys took small sheets with the female names written on them. And the Japanese consider February 14th as a kind of greeting day, when, generally, strong half of mankind receive the gifts (men and boys, notwomen or girls).
Валя: There’s one of the British customs: 4 or 5 guys write the names of the girls on the paper, throw them in a cap and take out. The girl whose name the boy takes out will be his "Valentine". A boy, standing on one knee, reads her a Shakespeare’s sonnet.
«Символи свята»
Heart
A long time ago, people believed that all emotions were found in the heart. In later years, they thought only love was connected with the heart. The heart is still a symbol of love, and because of this, it is also a symbol of Valentine’s Day.
Red Rose
The rose was a favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. Red is color that stands for strong feelings. This is why the red rose is a flower of love.
Ribbons
Ribbons go back to the days when ladies gave ribbons to their favourite knights when they went to war.
Lace
Lace is a pretty fabric made by weaving together fine threads. 100s of years ago, women carried lace handkerchiefs. If a woman dropped her handkerchief a man nearby might pick it up and return it to her. Sometimes a woman might see a man she wanted to meet. She might drop her lace handkerchief on purpose to encourage romance. Soon people thought of romance when they thought of lace. They began using paper lace to decorate chocolate boxes and Valentine’s cards. Lace comes from a Latin word; it means “to catch”. Lace was supposed to catch the heart of a loved one. Cupid
Cupid is son of Venus, goddess of love. He could cause people to fall in love by piercing them with 1 of his magic arrows.
Gloves
Years ago, when a man proposed marriage to a woman, he asked ”for her hand”. The hand became a symbol of marriage and love. Soon gloves also became a symbol of love.
Rings
In some countries men and women exchange rings when they become engaged or married. 200-300 years ago Valentine’s Day was a popular day for giving an engagement ring. An engagement ring usually had a stone or jewel set in it. Diamonds are common in today’s engagement rings.
Love birds and Doves
Lovebirds are colorful parrots found in Africa. Most have red bills. They are called love birds because they sit closely together in pairs. Doves were thought to be favourite birds of Venus. They remain with the same mates all their lives. The males and females both care for their babies. These birds are symbols of loyalty and love. They are also symbols of Valentine’s Day.
Валік: The theme of love is vividly observed in the literary works as well. The authors of all centuries and countries devoted their creations to this immortal feeling. I hope everyone knows immortal names of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips' red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damasked, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks,
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go -
My mistress when she walks treads on the ground.
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she belied with false compare.
Sonnet 130 by William Shakespeare в оригинале
And now let’s listen to the extract from “Romeo and Juliet” by…
Juliet.
Farewell! God knows when we shall meet again.
I have a faint cold fear thrills through my veins
That almost freezes up the heat of life:
I'll call them back again to comfort me;
Nurse! What should she do here?
My dismal scene I needs must act alone.
Come, vial.
What if this mixture do not work at all?
Shall I be married, then, tomorrow morning?
No, No! this shall forbid it.
O, look! me thinks I see my cousin's ghost
Seeking out Romeo, that did spit his body
Upon a rapier's point: stay, Tybalt, stay!
Romeo, I come! this do I drink to thee.
Валя: Yes, it was rather catching and emotional performance. But I prefer the love story which was represented in the film “The Titanic”. How do you find the sound-track from it sung by Celine Dion?
Валік: This story is immortal. As for me songs can express the feelings much more better then the poem or smth else. Let’s listen to this song by Olha Mytska.
Валя: There is a beautiful custom in England. On February, 14th, every St. Valentine’s Day thousands of people travel to a small village on Scotland’s border with England to get married. The village is called Gretna Green.
Валік:.Its romantic reputation began in 1754. In that time in England marriage for people under the age of 21 without parents’ permission was banned. However in Scotland, this permission was not required. Gretna Green was the first stop across the border. Many young couples came to Gretna Green to get married there.
Валя: Nowadays in this place, at least one couple gets married every day of the year. Weddings for St. Valentine’s Day have to be booked for 3 months in advance. On this day sweethearts exchange greetings of affection of love.
Валік: Here’s a special valentine
With lots of love for you
And since you’re very special
Here are hugs and kisses, too!
P7 The rose was the flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. Red is a color that stands for strong feelings. This is why the red rose is a flower of love.
Троянда – була квіткою Венери, богині кохання. Червоний колір виражає сильні почуття.
A white rose means
“You are so wonderful!”
A red rose says –
“I love you!”
A pink rose says –
“Please, believe me”
A rose without thorns
Means love at first sight.
POEMS
1
Your hair is so fair,
Your eye are so blue,
That’s why I can’t stop
Loving you!
2
Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Honey is sweet
And so are you!
3
If apples were pears and peaches were plums,
And the roses had different name.
If tigers were bears and fingers were thumbs
I’d love you just the same!
4. I wrote your name in the sky,
but the wind blew it away.
I wrote your name in the sand,
but the waves washed it away.
I wrote your name in my heart,
and forever it will stay. (Jessica Blade)
5. The red rose whispers of passion,
And the white rose breathes of love;
O, the red rose is a falcon,
And the white rose is a dove.
But I send you a cream-white rosebud
With a flush on its petal tips;
For the love that is purest and sweetest
Has a kiss of desire on the lips. by John Boyle O'Reilly
6. I love the way you look at me,
Your eyes so bright and blue.
I love the way you kiss me,
Your lips so soft and smooth.
I love the way you make me so happy,
And the ways you show you care.
I love the way you say, "I Love You,"
And the way you're always there.
I love the way you touch me,
Always sending chills down my spine.
I love that you are with me,
And glad that you are mine. (Crystal Jansen)
Валя: When and what age does the love come? From where should we wait for it? How many times can you love?
Валік: Answers to these questions will not be given to you. There are no love recipes.
Валя: When love is, that it is, and if not, then it will surely come.
Валік: First valentine. First date. The first flowers from your beloved. First kiss. First love ... The purest feeling. Many people remember that the first love is remembered forever, and though there are stronger feelings, the first is the most sacred.
Mr._Groove_-_You_And_Only_You sing 11 formers
For everybody:
Yes, you are right. Our party is over. But remember – 1) love is the 1 of the best feelings. 2) It is unique and eternal as our life. 3) It rules the world, it makes the world go round. 4) It’s beyond the age and time. 5) So let’s love and be loved by others and our earth will become more beautiful and kinder.
