Teacher:

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen!

We are happy to see you at our party. Today we are going to speak about Thanksgiving Day. You know, that it  is a very famous and popular holiday in the USA. We’ll do it in such a way: first, we’ll say a word or two about the history of this colourful holiday and then will play a little.

Pupil 1:

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all.

Pupil 2:

Each little flower that opens,
Each little bird that sings,
God made their glowing colours,
And made their tiny wings.

Pupil 3:

T – for time to be together,
Turkey, talk and tender weather.
H – for harvest stored away,
home and heart, and holiday.
A – for autumn's frosty art
and abundance in the heart.

Pupil 4:

N – neighbours, and November,
nice things, new things to remember
K – for kitchen, kettles, croon,
kith and kin expected soon.
S – for sizzles, sights and sounds,
and something special that abounds.

Together:

That spells THANKS – for joy in living
and a jolly good Thanksgiving!

TASK II

Teacher: You know that every people has its traditions, they may be similar or quite strange for us. But such a tradition we also have. It concerns sending postcards with greetings and wishes. The task is to sort out those which are connected with Thanksgiving Day.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,

Ring, happy bells, across the snow:

The year is going, let him go;

Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Then sing, young hearts that are full of cheer,

With never a thought of sorrow;

The old goes out, but the glad young year

Comes merrily in tomorrow.

                                                            ( New Year)

Because today's so special

it really wouldn't do,

to send one simple birthday wish

to last the whole year through...

So this wishes happy moments,

a day when dreams come true,

and a year that's filled with all the things

that mean the most to you.

                                                       ( Birthday)

There is magic all around us,

You can feel it in the air,

For the lovely signs of springtime

are unfolding everywhere.

It's a time of fulfilled promise,

It's a time of hope and cheer,

Joyful time of resurrection

Blessed Easter time.

                                                      ( Easter)

My love is like a cabbage:

Devided into two.

The leaves I give to others,

The heart I give to You!

                                                     ( St. Valentine)

THANKSGIVING WISHES

May you have more reasons to be thankful, each and every year.

May the angels protect you

 May the sadness forget you

May happiness be around you

 May God bless you

Wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving

May your hearts and home be full of divine blessings on this Thanksgiving!

TASK III

Teacher: Thanks a lot! You have managed to do everything and I think you deserve some fun. This action-game is called “ Pin the feathers on the turkey ”. But before doing it let’s listen to the poem devoted to the turkey the main symbol of Thanksgiving.

This plump turkey spread his tail like a fan.

This plump turkey away he ran.

This plump turkey flew up in a tree.

This plump turkey gobbled at me.

This plump turkey said, “I’ll leave right away,

So the cook can’t find me on Thanksgiving Day.”

Now I’ll tie a kerchief round your eyes and you will have to pin the feathers on the turkey with blind eyes.

Teacher: Traditions define a holiday and make it special. In any generation they form a link with the past and comprise a heritage for the future generations. Thanksgiving gives an opportunity to feel this continuous contact of generations The tradition of celebrating Thanksgiving Day is deeply rooted in American history.  And symbols of this holiday are just the same.

TASK IV

Teacher: Our next activity is devoted to the symbols of Thanksgiving. Your task is to fill in the gaps in the small texts with the words given below:

………. – a small group of people who came to America many years ago for religious freedom.

                                                                     (THE PILGRIMS)

It is thought that ………… was eaten by people thousands of years ago. However, Pilgrim women were the first mothers to serve ……….. for breakfast with sugar and cream. Pilgrims learnt lots of ways of using ………… from the native Indians.

                                                                    (POPCORN )

Though the wild ………… may not be the most handsome bird of the woods, it’s one of the most interesting and impressive, sharing in the historical and traditional limelight of the harvest season. It was domesticated by the Indians of Mexico.

                                                                 (TURKEY)

……….came through the normal trade roots from Central and South America. It  was used by the North American Indians centuries before Columbus reached the West Indies. It was boiled, baked in ashes, used in bread, and dried. Today …….. pie is a part of most traditional Thanksgiving dinners.

                                                                (PUMPKIN )

.............. – is the most popular game on this day. For many schools the Thanksgiving Day game is the most important one of the year. Usually there are several ……….. matches to watch on TV.

                                                              (FOOTBALL)

Words: (FOOTBALL( 2 times), POPCORN (3 times), PUMPKIN ( 2 times), THE PILGRIMS, TURKEY ) .

Teacher: Thank you very much for your activity. We have done everything planned for today except one thing. We haven’t spoken about one more symbol of Thanksgiving-Horn of Plenty.

THE HORN OF PLENTY (THE CORNUCOPIA) – is a familiar Thanksgiving symbol of earth’s bounty, and reminds us how much of our food comes from the earth.

Teacher: We are also thankful to our nearest and dearest for many things. Let’s make a Horn of Plenty.

Everybody takes a shirt of paper and writes own thanks. Then all volunteers read aloud their notes and put them down into the Horn of Plenty. Examples of thanks:

. We Are Thankful for Many Things

I thank Jesus for living and dying for me.

I am thankful to be able to do the thing I always wanted to do.

I am thankful for a good place to live and for plenty good food to eat. It makes me grow strong so I can have lots of fun. And that's what I like — fun.

Thank you for the music, and songs I am singing.

I am thankful for people who love me and help me.

I really feel thankful for all the good things in life.

I am thankful for my sister and my brother.

My MP3player is on the top of things to be thankful for.

I am thankful for so many blessings in my life.

My heart is filled with gratitude to my teachers.

Thanks for the flowers blooming and birds singing with good cheer.

I know that beauty of the world is a gift from God to help us live.

I am thankful for the pretty clothes I wear.

I have much to be thankful for.

A THANKSGIVING  PRAYER

Dear Lord, on this Thanksgiving Day

With grateful hearts we bow and pray

For blessings given from our birth

 Exceeding way beyond our worth

 For friends who've proven to be true;

 For pets, which count as friendships too;

 For home and country,

 Health and love

All sent to us from Heaven above.

Lord, please continue to be near

And guide us through another year.

By Carol Neumann Jersey City, New Jersey

The teacher thanks all pupils who have taken part in the festival and reads aloud his ( her) note.

                                  The conclusion

It is good to pause one day each year to take an account of yourself and your surroundings. Thanksgiving gives an opportunity to feel this continuous contact of generations. Thanksgiving is a time for sharing. It is better to give than to receive. Let us appreciate everything we are given!  Let us love our parents, relatives, teachers and friends!  Let us say thanks for everything!

       All together: THANKS!
