Lesson Plan

P1: Dear quests! Welcome to the festival of Irish culture that is called “Ireland Inspires…”

Ireland, it’s one place on Earth that heaven has kissed with melody, mirth and meadows and mist.

P2:  When Irish eyes are smiling

Sure it’s like a morning spring.

In the lilt on Irish laughter

You can hear the angels sing.

       When Irish hearts are happy,

All the world seems bright and gay

And when Irish eyes are smiling

       They’ll steal your heart away.

P1:  These are the words from a traditional Irish folk song. Let’s learn a few key facts about this country of  morning spring.

P3:  The full name of the country is The Republic of Ireland or Irish Republic. It is a small island on the edge of Europe, a next door neighbour of the Island of Britain.

       This is it’s flag.

The capital of the country is Dublin. It was founded by the Vikings.

4 mln people live in Ireland.

The national symbols are a shamrock, the Uilleann pipes and the harp.

Enjoy the beauty of the country that was blessed in a lot of poems and songs.

This beautiful land gave birth to some of the best-known Irish writers: Jonathan Swift, George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde, Seamus Heaney, James Joyce, Roddy Doyle and others; singers: Enya, the Corrs, the Chieftains, the Cranberries; and actors: Liam Neeson, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Farrel

P4:  As you’ve noticed Ireland has produced some of the best writers and poets in the English literature. One of them is James Joyce with his “Strings in the earth and air”

P5: Strings in the earth and air
Make music sweet;
Strings by the river where
The willows meet.

There's music along the river
For Love wanders there,
Pale flowers on his mantle
Dark leaves on his hair.

 All softly playing,
With head to the music bent,
And fingers straying
Upon an instrument.

(The reciting of the poems are accompanied by the music “Songs of Celtic Music”

P4:  Nothing can be compared to the beauty of Oscar Wilde’s “The Roses and the Rue”

P7:  Could we dig up this long-buried treasure,
Were it worth the pleasure,
We never could learn love's song,
We are parted too long.

Could the passionate past that is fled
Call back its dead,
Could we live it all over again,
Were it worth the pain!

I remember we used to meet
By an ivied seat,
And you warbled each pretty word
With the air of a bird;

And your eyes, they were green and grey
Like an April day,
But lit into amethyst
When I stooped and kissed;

P8: I remember so well the room,
And the lilac bloom
That beat at the dripping pane
In the warm June rain;

On your hand as it waved adieu
There were veins of blue;
In your voice as it said good-bye
Was a petulant cry,

Well, if my heart must break,
Dear love, for your sake,
It will break in music, I know,
Poets' hearts break so.

But strange that I was not told
That the brain can hold
In a tiny ivory cell
God's heaven and hell.

(The reciting of the poems are accompanied by the presentation of pictures and music)

P4:  Another well-known Irish poet and writer is Seamus Heaney who even received the Nobel Prize for Literature. So, Seamus Heaney “Blackberry Picking”

P9: Late August, given heavy rain and sun
For a full week, the blackberries would ripen.
At first, just one, a glossy purple clot
Among others, red, green, hard as a knot.
You ate that first one and its flesh was sweet
Like thickened wine: summer's blood was in it
Leaving stains upon the tongue and lust for
Picking.

(The reciting of the poem is accompanied by the video presentation)

P10:  Have you heard the Irish tunes in the music? Certainly, you have. The point is that Celtic music is clearly enjoying huge popularity. In fact, Irish pubs are opening all over the world and you wouldn’t be surprised to come across Irish music or an Irish pub in Kiev or Katmandu. Most of the music you hear in these pubs is traditional dance music – and you are expected to get up and dance. The Irish music session is not a spectactor sport. If you don’t participate you’ll miss out on the fun.

In Ireland there are two world-famous dancing groups: Riverdance and Lord of the Dance who tour the world constantly. Let’s enjoy the performance of one of them.

Video fragments of the Riverdance shows

P10: As Margaret Jackson said, “ Ireland is rich in literature that understand a soul’s yearning, a dancing that understands a happy heart.

P11: Irish dance is rich in energy, vitality and strength. But Irish music has also its quieter moods. Some people say that the harp, its national symbol, has magical powers.

     The sound of the Harp

P11: Another national instrument is the Uileann pipes which are very difficult to play. They say that if you take up the pipes, you need “seven years of learning, seven years of practising and seven years of playing to master them”.

     The sound of the pipes

P11: The violin or “fiddle” is played all over the country.

     The sound of the violin

P11: These traditional Irish instruments are often used by modern Irish musicians like Enya, and groups The Corrs, the Chieftains, the Cranberries. Enya, for example, is not often in the public eye, but she has sold millions of her gentle, easy-listening songs. And now one of our students will perform her world-famous song. Let’s welcome Anastasia Hemedzhieva with “Only Time”

(The pupil sings the song “Only Time”

Who can say where the road goes

Where the day flows, only time

And who can say if your love grows

As your heart chose, only time

Who can say why your heart sighs

As your love flies, only time

And who can say why your heart cries

When your love lies, only time

Who can say when the roads meet

That love might be in your heart

And who can say when the day sleeps

If the night keeps all your heart

Night keeps all your heart

Who can say if your love grows

As your heart chose - only time

And who can say where the road goes

Where the day flows, only time

Who can say where the road goes

Where the day flows, only time

And who can say if your love grows

As your heart chose, only time

Who knows? Only time

Who knows? Only time

P12: Not to be left out the Irish film scene is in good shape, too. Film actors such as Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan ar international stars. Among the films you should look out for is Michael Collins if you want to have some serious thinking with Liam Neeson, Alan Ridman and Julia Roberts as leading actors

P12: If you want to burst out laughing you should watch the Snapper.

The Snapper trailer

P12: If you want to have a rest, listen to the best-selling Irish pop groups of recent years: the Corrs and the Cranberries.

(The pupil sings the Corrs’s song “Angel”)

She lived like she knew nothing lasts
Didn't care to look like anyone else
And she was beautiful, so beautiful
I still hear her laugh like she's here

Shower it down on all the young
It isn't so wrong to have such fun

Forever angel,

I hope they love you like we do
Forever angel,

I'll be proud to be like you
Be like you (I'll be proud to be like you)

Does the sun shine up at you

when you're looking down?
Do you get along with the others around?

It's got to be better than before
You don't need to worry now you're gone

Forever angel,

I hope they love you like we do
Forever angel,

I'll be proud to be like you
Be like you, just like you

And when I go to sleep at night
I'll thank you for each blessed thing surrounding me
For every fall I'll ever break
Each moment's breath I want to taste
Confidence and conscience, decadent extravagance
Never ending providence, for loving when I had the chance

Angel, I hope they love you like we do
Forever angel, I'll be proud to be like you
Forever angel, I'll be proud to be like you
Be like you
I'll be proud to be like you

P1: We want to say goodbye with a famous Irish parting

P2: May the road rise to meet you

May the wind be always at your back

May the sun shine warm upon your face

May the rain fall down soft upon your fields

And until we meet again

May god hold you in the palm of his hand.
