Act One
Scene 1: Getting ready
Alex's living room. ALEX is arranging sleeping bags nervously. MOM enters carrying
snacks.
ALEX:
Mom! Are the sleeping bags straight? Do they look cool?
MOM:
They look great, sweetie! Your friends are going to have a lit time!
ALEX:
(cringes)
Mom, please don't say "lit." Nobody says that anymore.
MOM:
Really? What about "on fleek"? Is that still cool?
ALEX:
Mom! Nobody has said "on fleek" since like 2015!
MOM:
Oh. Well, I'm just trying to be hip!
ALEX:
(groans)
And definitely don't say "hip."
DAD enters wearing a Hawaiian shirt and carrying a pizza.
DAD:
Pizza delivery! Get it? Because I'm delivering pizza!

MOM:
That's very clever, honey!
ALEX:
(to audience)
Help me.
DAD:
So! Sleepover tonight! Are you excited?
ALEX:
Yes, but I'm also nervous. What if something goes wrong?
MOM:
Nothing will go wrong! We'll be upstairs if you need us!
ALEX:
Please, PLEASE stay upstairs. Don't come down unless it's an emergency.
DAD:
Don't worry! We'll be invisible! Like ninjas!
ALEX:
Ninjas aren't invisible, Dad.
DAD:
They're not?
(thinks)
Well, that explains a lot about my Halloween costume.
TOMMY runs in.
TOMMY:
Is the sleepover starting? Can I join? Please please please!
ALEX:
No, Tommy! This is for my friends! Kids my age!
TOMMY:
But I'm not THAT much younger! Only six years!
ALEX:
That's a lot of years!
TOMMY:
Please! I'll be quiet! You won't even know I'm there!
ALEX:
Tommy, you're never quiet.
TOMMY:
I can be! Watch!
(stands silently for three seconds, then)
How long was that? Five
minutes?
ALEX:
That was three seconds.
MOM:
Tommy, sweetheart, you can have your own sleepover next week!
TOMMY:
(pouting)
Fine. But I'm going to spy on you!
ALEX:
Tommy!
TOMMY:
Kidding! Maybe.
(runs off)
Scene 2: The friends arrive
Doorbell rings. MAYA enters with a huge bag.
MAYA:
Alex!
(hugs)
I'm so excited! This is going to be amazing!
(takes out phone)
Let me
take a picture!
(starts taking selfies)
ALEX:
Maya, you just got here!
MAYA:
I need to post that I'm at a sleepover! My followers need to know!

JORDAN enters and goes straight to the pizza.
JORDAN:
Is that pizza? I'm starving! I haven't eaten in like... two hours!
ALEX:
Jordan, you can wait five minutes!
JORDAN:
Five minutes?! I might die!
SAM enters carrying books.
SAM:
Hello, everyone! Did you know that the word "sleepover" first appeared in 1955?
JORDAN:
(mouth full of pizza)
Nobody asked, Sam.
SAM:
I'm just sharing interesting facts!
RILEY enters.
RILEY:
Guess what? I brought jokes! Want to hear one?
ALEX:
Is it better than my dad's jokes?
RILEY:
Everything is better than dad jokes. Why did the phone go to school?
MAYA:
(not looking up from phone)
Why?
RILEY:
Because it wanted to improve its cell service!
(laughs)
JORDAN:
That's... actually pretty bad.
RILEY:
Hey! My jokes are great!
CASEY enters quietly.
CASEY:
(softly)
Hi, everyone.
EVERYONE:
Hi, Casey!
MAYA:
Casey, come here! We need a group photo!
MORGAN enters dramatically.
MORGAN:
I'm here! Let the party begin!
(poses)
Also, did you hear about what happened
at school yesterday?
ALEX:
What happened?
MORGAN:
So much drama! But I'll tell you later. It's a long story.
TAYLOR enters, very chill.
TAYLOR:
Hey.
(flops on sleeping bag)
This is nice.
ALEX:
Taylor, you just got here!
TAYLOR:
Yeah, but I'm already comfortable. Good sleepover.

Scene 3: Parents try to be cool
All friends sit around. MOM and DAD peek in from the side.
MOM:
(whispering to Dad)
Should we go say hi?
DAD:
(whispering back)
Alex said to stay upstairs.
MOM:
But I want to be part of the fun!
DAD:
Me too! Let's just pop in for a second!
They enter. All the kids look up.
ALEX:
(mortified)
Mom? Dad? What are you doing?
MOM:
Just checking if you need anything! Snacks? Drinks? Music?
MAYA:
(politely)
We're good, thank you!
DAD:
You know, I was young once too! I remember sleepovers!
RILEY:
When was that? The 1800s?
JORDAN:
(laughing)
Burn!
DAD:
Hey! I'm not that old! I'm... I'm hip!
ALL KIDS:
(trying not to laugh)
ALEX:
(through gritted teeth)
Mom. Dad. Please. Go. Upstairs.
MOM:
Okay, okay! But if you need anything, just shout! Or text! Do kids still text? Or is it all
TikTok now?
SAM:
TikTok is an app, not a communication method...
ALEX:
Mom!
MOM:
Right! Going upstairs! Have fun! YOLO!
(leaves)
ALEX:
Did my mom just say YOLO?
MORGAN:
That was painful to watch.
CASEY:
(quietly)
I thought it was kind of sweet.
TAYLOR:
(still lying down)
Parents are weird.
Act Two
Scene 4: Games and chaos
MAYA:
Okay! Let's play truth or dare!
Sleepover Survival Guide: A Comedy Play for English Week
Page 5 of 13
JORDAN:
Yes! I dare someone to eat five pieces of pizza in one minute!
SAM:
That's not how the game starts. Someone has to choose truth or dare first.
JORDAN:
Okay, okay. Alex! Truth or dare?
ALEX:
Um... truth?
JORDAN:
Boring! But okay. Who do you have a crush on?
ALEX:
(blushing)
That's private!
MORGAN:
Ooh! You DO have a crush! Who is it? You have to tell us!
ALEX:
That's not fair!
RILEY:
The rules of truth or dare are very clear. You must answer!
ALEX:
Fine! But you can't tell anyone! It's... uh...
(whispers a name)
MAYA:
(gasps)
Really?! I knew it!
CASEY:
(quietly)
That's nice.
TAYLOR:
Cool.
TOMMY suddenly appears from behind a couch.
TOMMY:
I heard that! Alex has a crush!
ALEX:
TOMMY! What are you doing?! You're supposed to be in bed!
TOMMY:
I told you I'd spy on you!
MORGAN:
He's been there the whole time?!
TOMMY:
Yep! I heard everything!
(runs off)
Alex has a crush! Alex has a crush!
ALEX:
(chasing)
Tommy, come back! Don't tell Mom and Dad!
ALEX runs off and comes back a minute later, looking defeated.
ALEX:
He escaped. My life is over.
RILEY:
Don't worry! Little brothers are annoying, but they forget things quickly!
SAM:
Actually, studies show that younger siblings have excellent memory when it comes
to embarrassing information about older siblings.
RILEY:
Sam! Not helping!
Scene 5: Midnight snacks
Later. Everyone is eating snacks.
JORDAN:
(eating)
This is the best part of sleepovers. Unlimited snacks!

MAYA:
(taking photos of food)
This pizza looks so good! I need to post it!
RILEY:
Are you going to post pictures of everything?
MAYA:
Yes! People need to know I'm having fun!
TAYLOR:
But you're too busy taking pictures to actually have fun.
MAYA:
(defensive)
I AM having fun! I'm having documented fun!
MORGAN:
Guys, guys! Can we talk about the drama at school? So, you know Sarah from
Class 7A?
SAM:
There are three Sarahs in Class 7A.
MORGAN:
The tall one! With the hair!
RILEY:
They all have hair, Morgan.
MORGAN:
You know who I mean! Anyway, she...
JESSICA, the older sister, enters wearing headphones.
JESSICA:
Can you all be quiet? Some of us are trying to sleep!
ALEX:
Jessica, it's only 10 PM!
JESSICA:
Exactly! Very late!
JORDAN:
You're 17. Don't you stay up late?
JESSICA:
Only when I'm doing something cool. Not listening to middle schoolers giggle.
RILEY:
We don't giggle! We... express joy audibly!
JESSICA:
That's the same thing. Whatever. Just be quieter.
(leaves)
CASEY:
(quietly)
Your sister is scary.
ALEX:
She's not scary. Just... grumpy. And she thinks she's better than everyone.
MORGAN:
Typical older sister behavior.
Scene 6: Ghost stories
RILEY:
Let's tell scary stories!
TAYLOR:
(still lying down)
I'm not scared of anything.
RILEY:
Perfect! Turn off the lights!
Lights dim. Everyone holds a flashlight under their face.
RILEY:
Once upon a time, there was a school... just like our school...
SAM:
Statistically, most ghost stories start with "once upon a time."

RILEY:
Sam! You're ruining the mood!
SAM:
Sorry. Continue.
RILEY:
Anyway! In this school, there was a student who never did their homework...
JORDAN:
That's not scary. That's just me.
RILEY:
(ignoring Jordan)
And one day, the student disappeared! Nobody knew where they
went! Until... they found them... IN THE LIBRARY!
MAYA:
The library? That's not scary!
RILEY:
It is when you realize... they had been reading... THE SAME BOOK... FOR FIFTY
YEARS!
CASEY:
(quietly)
That's actually kind of sad.
TAYLOR:
Not scary at all.
RILEY:
Fine! You try telling a story!
MORGAN:
I have a story! A true story! It's about... THE CAFETERIA MYSTERY MEAT!
ALL:
(gasp)
MORGAN:
Nobody knows what it's made of! Is it chicken? Is it beef? Is it... SOMETHING
ELSE?
JORDAN:
It's definitely something else. I ate it once. I was sick for two days.
SAM:
The mystery meat is actually a mixture of...
ALL:
We don't want to know!
TOMMY jumps out.
TOMMY:
BOO!
ALL:
(scream)
ALEX:
TOMMY! You scared us!
TOMMY:
(laughing)
That was so funny! You all screamed!
ALEX:
Mom! Dad! Tommy is bothering us again!
MOM and DAD rush in.
DAD:
What's wrong? Is everyone okay?
MOM:
We heard screaming!
ALEX:
Tommy jumped out and scared us!
DAD:
(trying not to laugh)
Tommy, that's not nice. But also...
(laughs)
that's pretty funny!

MOM:
Mike! Don't encourage him!
TOMMY:
Dad thinks it's funny!
ALEX:
Can someone please take Tommy to bed?
MOM:
Come on, Tommy. Time for sleep. For real this time.
TOMMY:
(being dragged away)
But I want to stay! This is fun!
Act Three
Scene 7: Deep conversations
Very late at night. Everyone is in a sleeping bag, but nobody is sleeping.
MAYA:
(puts down phone)
Guys, can I ask something serious?
JORDAN:
Are we out of pizza?
MAYA:
No! Something actually serious!
ALEX:
What is it?
MAYA:
Do you ever feel like... everyone else has everything figured out except you?
MORGAN:
All the time!
SAM:
Actually, research shows that most teenagers feel that way!
RILEY:
Sam, this is a feelings conversation, not a facts conversation.
SAM:
Feelings are supported by facts!
CASEY:
(quietly)
I feel like that too, Maya. Like everyone else knows what to say and I
don't.
ALEX:
Casey, you always know the right thing to say! You're just quiet about it!
JORDAN:
Yeah! You're like... secretly wise!
CASEY:
(smiling)
Really?
TAYLOR:
(sitting up for the first time)
I think we all feel weird sometimes. That's normal.
MORGAN:
Even you, Taylor? You always seem so chill!
TAYLOR:
I'm chill on the outside. Inside, I'm like... "ahhhhh!"
(makes crazy gesture)
RILEY:
We're all just pretending to have it together!
ALEX:
That's actually really comforting.
MAYA:
Group hug!
Sleepover Survival Guide: A Comedy Play for English Week
Page 9 of 13
JORDAN:
Do we have to?
MAYA:
Yes!
Everyone group hugs.
SAM:
This is nice. Did you know hugs release oxytocin, which is...
ALL:
SAM!
SAM:
Right. Not the time.
Scene 8: Sunrise surprise
Morning. Everyone is asleep in funny positions. MOM and DAD peek in.
DAD:
(whispering)
Look at them! So peaceful!
MOM:
Should we make breakfast?
DAD:
Yes! I'll make my famous pancakes!
MOM:
Mike, your pancakes are always burned.
DAD:
Not always! Sometimes they're only slightly burned!
They tiptoe out. ALEX wakes up.
ALEX:
(to audience)
Best sleepover ever.
(sees friends sleeping in funny positions)
Even if
we're all weird.
MAYA's phone alarm goes off. Everyone wakes up confused.
MAYA:
(groggy)
Is it morning already?
JORDAN:
I smell food!
RILEY:
(still half asleep)
Are we at school? Did I miss the test?
SAM:
(immediately awake)
What test?!
ALEX:
There's no test! We're at my house! Sleepover, remember?
MORGAN:
(dramatically)
I can't believe we survived the night!
TAYLOR:
(yawning)
It was just sleeping, Morgan.
CASEY:
(quietly)
I had fun.
ALEX:
Really? Even with my embarrassing parents and annoying brother?
EVERYONE:
Yes!
JORDAN:
Your parents are funny!
MAYA:
And your brother is kind of cute. Annoying, but cute.

RILEY:
Plus, we got to bond! Like a real friend group!
SAM:
Studies show that sleepovers strengthen social bonds by...
ALL:
(laughing)
SAM!
DAD enters with a plate of burned pancakes.
DAD:
Breakfast is served! I made pancakes!
JORDAN:
Are they... supposed to be black?
DAD:
That's just extra crispy! It's a feature, not a bug!
MOM enters with a bowl of cereal.
MOM:
I also brought cereal. Just in case.
EVERYONE:
Cereal, please!
DAD:
(hurt)
My pancakes aren't that bad!
TOMMY runs in.
TOMMY:
Morning! Did everyone have fun? Did Alex talk about their crush more?
ALEX:
TOMMY!
ALL FRIENDS:
(laughing)
Scene 9: Goodbye
Later. The friends are packing up.
MAYA:
This was amazing! We should do this every month!
JORDAN:
If we do, I'm bringing more snacks.
RILEY:
And I'm bringing better ghost stories!
SAM:
I'll bring more interesting facts!
EVERYONE:
NO!
SAM:
(smiling)
Worth a try.
MORGAN:
Same time next month?
ALEX:
Definitely!
CASEY:
(quietly)
Thanks for inviting me. I was nervous, but this was really fun.
ALEX:
Of course! You're part of the group!
TAYLOR:
We're all part of the group. That's what makes it good.
MAYA:
Group photo before we leave!
Sleepover Survival Guide: A Comedy Play for English Week
Page 11 of 13
Everyone gathers. MOM, DAD, JESSICA and TOMMY photobomb in the background.
ALEX:
MOM! DAD! You ruined the photo!
MOM:
We're part of the family!
JESSICA:
(from the back)
I didn't even want to be in this photo!
TOMMY:
I did! Cheese!
DAD:
Did someone say cheese? Because I have a joke about cheese!
ALL FRIENDS:
NO!
DAD:
Fine. But for the record, it was very gouda!
RILEY:
(groaning)
That was terrible!
JORDAN:
Even I could make a better joke!
ALEX:
(to audience)
My family is embarrassing. My friends are weird. But you know what?
That's perfect.
MAYA:
(posting on phone)
Just posted our group photo! Hashtag BestFriends, hashtag
SleepoversAreLit!
ALEX:
Maya, we talked about saying "lit"...
MAYA:
I know! But it's ironic now!
SAM:
Actually, that's not how irony works...
EVERYONE:
SAM!
Everyone laughs.
ALL TOGETHER:
(to audience)
Friends and family! They're crazy, but they're ours!
Everyone waves and bows. TOMMY runs across the stage one more time for a final laugh.
THE END
Director's notes
The humor works on two levels: teen actors enjoy playing embarrassing parents and
annoying siblings, and 8-10 year olds enjoy the physical comedy and the dad jokes.
Where the laughs are
Parents trying too hard to be cool with outdated slang ("lit," "YOLO," "on fleek")
Dad's terrible jokes and puns, which everyone groans at
Tommy hiding behind the couch and jumping out
Sleepover Survival Guide: A Comedy Play for English Week
Page 12 of 13
Taylor lying down for most of the play
Jordan always eating, Maya always taking photos, Sam always saying "Actually..."
Dad's burned pancakes, and everyone waking up in funny positions
Staging
Arrange the sleeping bags in a circle in the middle of the stage.
Parents can peek in from behind a door frame or a chair.
Use phone flashlights for the ghost story scene.
Keep the pace fast and the energy high.
Language support (A1+ to A2)
Mostly simple present and present continuous
Short sentences and repeated phrases ("Actually...", "Can I join?", "Go upstairs!")
Everyday vocabulary: food, family, school, feelings
Ask actors to speak slowly and clearly for the younger audience
Flexible casting:
with 10 actors, cut Jessica and Casey. Names are gender-neutral, so any
student can play any role. Teachers may want to check that the "crush" and "mystery
meat" jokes suit their school.
Themes:
everyone feels weird sometimes, embarrassing families are still loving families,
and good friends accept you as you are.
