Procedure of the lesson “Split vowel magic “e”. Weather in different seasons”
Subject of the lesson: Split vowel magic “e”. Weather in different seasons.
Objectives: introducing the topic of split vowel magic “e”; understanding how “e” changes sounds; improving spelling skills with “i_e” pattern; practicing identifying and reading words with the split vowel pattern “i_e”; revising weather vocabulary through flashcards and discussions.
Outcomes: by the end of the lesson the students are expected to be able to recognize words where the “e” changes the sound of the vowel before it; enhance spelling skills; reinforce weather vocabulary and use it in discussions.

Lesson Procedure
- Good morning students! I’m glad to see you.
- Good morning!
Students sing the song “Hello!” with gestures:
- I hope you are doing well. First of all, we’re going to start our lesson with the song “Hello!”. So please, stand up and let’s sing the song. (students are singing the song)
Teacher presents phonetic topic “Magic “e” (split i_e)”:
- Well, the topic of our today’s lesson is Magic “e”, namely split i_e. Teacher holds up card 6 (bin).
- Tell me please what’s the sound do we have in this word?” (/i/). Yes, you’re right!
Teacher holds up card 29 (bike).
- What about this one? What’s the sound do we have here? (/ai/). Well done! Please repeat these two words “bin” and “bike”.
(students repeat in chorus several times)
As you can see Magic “e” makes the vowel long. Now please have a look at another words and let’s repeat them, as well.
(students repeat in chorus words bike, kite, nine, white, line)
Teacher says all the words again for children to repeat.
- And now, we’re going to watch the video about our today’s topic and your task is to listen carefully and repeat the words. Please pay attention and let’s get started. (students are watching the video)
Teacher plays the first part of the recording. Students listen and point the appropriate pictures. Then, teacher plays the second part for students to repeat. Last time, teacher plays the recording all the way through for children to repeat once more.
Alright! Now please open your books on page 77, exercise 1. We’re going to listen the recording and your task is to listen and point the correct pictures. (students do the task) Well, now your task is to listen and repeat the words. (students repeat words) Well done, and let’s do it one more time. (students repeat words and point pictures) Good job!
2.4. Reading (6 min)
- Alright students, now please have a look at exercise 2. First of all, your task is to read this song. Who would like to be the first? (5 students read the song)
Teacher writes down first line of the song on blackboard and explain for students their task to find example of i_e and circle. (ide in ride, ike in bike, ite in kite)
- Now please open your notebooks, and tell me please, What day is it today? (It is Thursday) And what month is it now? (It is March). Well done! Now I’m going to write down first line of the song and your task is to find and circle all the examples of i_e. (students find and circle the examples). Good job! Let’s do the same task with the whole song. (students do the task)
2.5. Exercises (3 min)
- Now, let’s do the exercise 4. Your task here is to listen the recording and fill the words with missing letters. So, let’s get started. (students do the task)
Alright, now please open your workbooks and let’s do exercises 1 and 2. In the first exercise your task is to order the letters and in the second one you should write down the correct words in the text. (students do the tasks)
2.6. Physical activity (2 min)
- And now, let’s take a little break. Stand up please and let’s do physical activity. (Students watch video “Birds action song” and repeat movements)
2.7. Revising weather vocabulary (2 min)
Teacher shows flashcards with words and students say these words in English.
- So, your task for today was to learn new vocabulary. I hope you’re ready for today. In any case, let’s check it using flashcards. (students look at the flashcards and say the words)
2.8. Discussion of seasons and weather (11 min)
Teacher shares the presentation and have the discussion with students.
- Okay, now, as you can see, we’re going to talk about seasons and weather. First of all, tell me please How many seasons do we have? (4 seasons) Who would like to tell me the names of the seasons? (spring, summer, autumn, winter)
In which season is it cold/hot/raining/snowing? (winter, summer, autumn, winter) (slide 3)
- And now, we’re going to read small texts about times of the year and your task is to tell me what seasons are they talking about? (4 students read and answer) (slide 4)
- Your next task is to describe seasons, using the words below. (slides 5-8)

Summer is (bright). It is (hot). I can (swim).
Autumn is (yellow). It is (raining). I can (stay at home).
