Many people have seen serial robots in action either on assembly lines or in the movies. An example is a robotic arm that helps assemble a product.
A robotic arm is a robot manipulator, usually programmable, with similar functions to a human arm. The links of such a manipulator are connected by joints allowing either rotational motion or translational displacement. The links of the manipulator can form a kinematic chain. The business end of the kinematic chain of the manipulator is called the end effector and it is similar to the human hand. The end effector can be designed to perform any desired task such as welding, gripping, soldering etc.
The areas where robots have been used now for a few years include agriculture, medicine, transport such as self-driving cars, security and industry. Using robots reduces risks at the workplace. It’s important that robots can operate under dangerous circumstances where humans are unable to do the same tasks.
