- Today we are going to speak a lot about stars, everything that is connected with them in this or other way. You won‟t write much during the lesson. And it will be some kind of entertainment for you.
- Before we start, I would like to know if you guessed why I‟ve chosen this topic.
- What do you think about when you hear the word “stars”? - Where can we find them?
- I think all of us at least once in our life looked into the sky watching a starry night. We wished upon a shooting star, thinking how huge and beautiful the world is. Modern technologies help us to see the beauty of distinct galaxies and solar systems taking photos with hi-tech telescopes. But stars are not only space objects. They stand firmly on the ground, living in people and their works.
- So, as you see we are going to speak not only about space, but people and stars in art.
- Let‟s start with people. Whom do we call „stars‟?
- Call those who are real stars according to your thoughts and explain your choice. - Why do we call them stars in this case?
- But we shouldn‟t forget about negative meaning of being a „star‟. What do I mean? - Why do we use the same word for describing such people?
- What are synonyms for such stars? (show-off, smart aleck)
- When we speak about stars among people we usual mean film stars. Do we have stars in art? Who are they?
- How can you explain the meaning of the term “art”? Because we often speak and think of something classical.
- What kinds of art do you know?
- Look at the blackboard and give your own examples for every kind of art in a connection with stars.
l Astronomy
c Astrology
³ Computer science (games)
Paintings
¨ Literature
º Music (songs, soundtracks)
¸ Cinematography (films, cartoons)
- What were the first attempts of drawing stars? (constellations) - Why were constellations given such names?
- It can be some kind of a connection between ordinary people and gods. What do they tell you?
- A lot of artists devoted, devote and will devote their works to starlit nights. Van Gogh was one of them (Starry Night, Night). Others use star themes for designing postcards. And I hope you remember our visit to Kate Dudnik‟s exhibition.
- Why do people draw stars or use them in their canvases?
- Maybe that is why they are so famous in tattoo saloons. Look at different designs – they are simple in their connection with nature, or may represent human‟s heart, or have funny motives.
- Now let‟s talk about literature. Where can we find the mention about stars? (science fiction, fairy-tales, poetry)
- Why do we have books and stories about stars or space?
- What meanings do people put into writing about stars?
- Give your own examples. What are the meanings of stars in them?
- Of course, science fiction books explain the scientific side of stars – distance between them and planets, their structure – SCIENCE, you know. But could you give two books as an example for stars playing the role of a symbol of…faith, hope or wishes?
- The first one is thought to be one of the greatest masterpieces ever created by a human being, and is translated, I think, into all possible languages. (Bible)
- The second has two variant in Russian and English languages. (Pinocchio)
- Of course, to create a story you need words, lots of words. Stars and space take active part in word building and phrases formation.
- What does the word building mean?
- How can we form the words? Give your examples.
- Call as many suffixes you know as possible. - What about prefixes?
- Don‟t forget about compounding – when you use two words to make one – like snowman, something, dragonfly, ladybird.
- Look at the following words and phrases and try to guess, if you don‟t know, their meaning.
l Starfish lShooting star
l Starfruit lStar-shaped
l Starless lStarry-eyes – щасливий
lStargazer – споглядач зірок, сортлілій lStarry-eyed – романтичний
l Starry lTo see stars – зірки перед очима
l Star-crossed – так вийшлоlSpaceship
l Star jump lSpacesuit
l Spaceman
- Make up a sentence using any of the words or phrases. But be attentive, I don‟t want you to repeat the words or grammar structures.
- By the way, even in so famous bestseller of Dan Brown The Da Vinci Codespace object are mentioned too. According to the professor and the father of Sofie, who made his daughter learn English well, it is possible to make 99 words out of the word “PLANETS”. I don‟t expect you to deal all of them but the third part would make me feel proud of you. You have 4 minutes to do it.

- The Da Vinci Code became a hit and was filmed immediately. That‟s what happens to good books. And now, as all of you understood, we are going to speak about cinematography.
- What films about space come to your mind?
- On the blackboard you can see pictures of different, not all, films somehow connected with space and stars.
- You must pick up a film from the list I offer you and describe its plot without giving names. Others have to guess.
Transformers
Men in Black
Star Wars
X-files
- One of the offered soundtracks was Ticket to the Moon from Armageddon. The words of the song are very simple as well as the melody. You are going to watch the video, read the words, and sing if you wish. Then, we will discuss the text of the song and the pictures from the video.
Ticket to the moon ELO
Remember the good old 1980s?
When things were so uncomplicated?
I wish I could go back there again
And everything could be the same.
I‟ve got a ticket to the moon
I‟ll be leaving here any day soon
Yeah, I‟ve got a ticket to the moon
But I‟d rather see the sunrise in your eyes.
Got a ticket to the moon
I‟ll be rising high above the earth so soon
And the tears I cry might turn into the rain That gently falls upon your window You‟ll never know.
Refrain:
Ticket to the moon – 3
Fly, fly through a troubled sky
Up to a new world shining bright, oh, oh.
Flying high above
Soaring madly through the mysteries that come
Wondering sadly if the ways that led me here
Could turn around and I would see you there
Standing there (and I would see you there, waiting...)
Ticket to the moon
Flight leaves here today from Satellite Two As the minutes go by, what should I do? I paid the fare, what more can I say? It‟s just one way (only one way)...
Refrain – 2
- Why does this song have such a title?
- What do the first two lines in the song mean?
(Remember the good old 1980s?
When things were so uncomplicated?)
- There were other interesting phrases. Try to explain them: “troubled sky”, “tears may turn into the rain in your eyes”, “sunrise in your eyes”, “new world shining bright”, “I paid the fare”. - What ways did the creators of the video use to impress us, to show the desperate situation? (praying of crowds, fast shots, explosions, people crying, showing faces)
- The first part of the lesson we were talking mainly about bright sides of being a star or great influence on different spheres of people‟s lives. What does this video or the film itself tell us about?
- Is the danger real? Why? What other “troubles” can the sky bring?
- Talking about films and soundtracks without mentioning the inhabitants of other planets would be unfair.
- How do we call these inhabitants? (aliens, extraterrestrial, et, space invaders, little green men) - How do people usually describe them?
- How do you think why the aliens have such shape and colour?
- Talking about aliens we meet the believers and their opponents. Why is it hard to believe in them?
- If the aliens tried to make or force you do something, what would you do?
- Remember, the best thing is to call Men in Black. What do you know about them?
- So, let‟s watch another video to the soundtrack with the same name. You have the words of the song on the papers to make sure you understand Will Smith. And as we talk about word building, underline the words formed with suffixes, prefixes, or compounding.
Men in Black
Will Smith
Here come the Men In Black It‟s the MIB‟s, uh, here come the MIB‟s Here come the Men In Black They won‟t let you remember
The good guys dress in black, remember that
Just in case we ever face to face and make contact
The title held by me, MIB
Means what you think you saw, you did not see
So don‟t brink be what was there is now gone
The black suits with the black Ray Bans on
Walk in shadow, move in silence
Guard against extra-terrestrial violence
But, yo, we aren‟t on no government list
We straight don‟t exist, no names and no fingerprints Saw somethin’ strange, watch your back „Cause you never quite know where the MIB‟s is at
Refrain:
Here come the Men In Black, Men In Black
Galaxy defenders
Here come the Men In Black, Men In Black
They won‟t let you remember
Now, from the deepest of the darkest of night
On the horizon, bright light enters sight tight
Cameras zoom, on the impending doom
But then like boom black suits fill the room up
With the quickness, talk with the witnesses Hypnotizer, neuralizer, vivid memories turn to fantasies
Ain‟t no MIB‟s, can I please?
Do what we say, that‟s they way we kick it
D‟ya know what I mean
I see my noisy cricket get wicked on ya We‟re your first, last and only line of defense
Against the worst scum of the universe
So don‟t fear us, cheer us
If you ever get near us, don‟t jeer us, we‟re fearless MIB‟s freezin‟ up all the flack
What‟s that stand for?
Men In Black
Let me see ya just bounce it with me
Just bounce with me – 2
Come on, let me see ya just slide with me
Just slide with me – 2
Come on, let me see ya talk a walk with me
Just walk with me – 2
Come on and make your neck work
Now freeze
Refrain:
Alright check it
Let me tell you this in closing
I know we might seem imposing
But trust me, if we ever show in your section
Believe me, it‟s for your own protection
„Cause we see things that you need not see
And we be places that you need not be
So go on with your life
Forget that Roswell crap
Show love to the black suit
„Cause that‟s the men in
- Why did the authors of this video choose exactly those scenes from the film? - Why do people dance in the end?
- What did that little device in Mr. Smith‟s hand mean? And why was he sorry for? - Describe Men in Black with the help of a song.
- What kinds of aliens were presented in the video?
- So, what words did you underline?
- Let‟s check up your memory, just in case you are sent to space.
- What songs have been played today?
- Do you remember the titles of films we were talking about?
- How many words did Sophie have to make out of „planets‟?
- Call as many words formed by suffixes and prefixes as possible. - So, why do we connect our lives with stars so greatly?
- Well, you‟re not show-offs, or smart alecks…and you are not MiB for sure.
- You are my superstars. I knew it and that‟s why I picked some stars from the sky just for you.
- But… it doesn‟t mean you won‟t have your home assignment.
- Make up a story, or a poem about stars or space. You can draw a picture or your own design for tattoo with its description.
- There should be 15-20 sentences at least.
- I hope you are born under a lucky star. So, shine brightly, warming my heart and fulfilling your parents‟ hopes and wishes.
