The theme of the lesson: “Environmental   problems”

Objectives of the lesson: 

  • Practical: to revise the vocabulary on the topic for expressing opinions, practice using the knowledge on the theme “Environment”.
  • Educational: to activate pupils’ speaking skills through various creative activities, teach to be quick-witted, increase pupils’ awareness towards the problem under discussion.
  • Developing: to develop pupils’ ability to self-study and to search information, creative imagination, logical thinking and memory, the abilities of listening to the speakers.
  • Upbringing: to encourage pupils to learn a foreign language, use the Internet resources and social network, nurture pupils to be patriots of their native land, bring them up to love and be friendly to nature and our native country environment.

Equipment:a video, quiz : "Ecological problems", a computer presentation, visuals (posters, schemes)

Procedure

I. The beginning of the lesson

1. Greeting.

T: Get ready for the lesson, please. Prepare all your necessary things for the lesson.

Good morning! Sit down, please.

2. Introducing the theme and aims.

(The demonstration of slides during the whole lesson).

T: The  topic of our lesson is "Environmental problems" .Today we are going to discuss the main environmental problems endangering us & the solutions to them. You’ll have the chance:

  1. share the information you know on the topic;
  2. to accumulate some knowledge and interesting facts on the topic;
  3. to summarize the information which we have already learnt.

Today we are going to work in groups. Each group must follow next rules :

R espect others

O n time

U se quiet voices

P articipate

S peak English only

 Each group has a leader. At the end of each task the leader of your group must decide who was the best and give him or her this card.  

3. Warming up.

T: To start with I 'd like to suggest to you doing an environmental quiz . The aim of this quiz is to check up our general knowledge on this subject. Let's start doing it. (Quiz: "Ecological problems"  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-CbS2h7Ly0  )

T: Was it interesting for you? Tell me please, who answered all these questions correctly?

II. The main part of the lesson.

1. Check on homework.

T: Environment is everything around us: houses and trees, rivers and lakes, hills and mountains, woods and wildlife. But our planet is in great danger. It is suffering from many environmental problems. Have a look at these pictures. What problems do these pictures show us?

 For today each group must prepare a short report about one of these problems. Now, let's check your hometask .

2. Listening.

T:The problems of environment are important all over the world. The British people suffer from different ecological problems too. Let’s watching the video about environment in Great Britain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTucPNu2YTE

 

Look at the proper names you ‘ll hear in the video:

Proper names:

Peak District National Park - one of the best loved National Parks in the UK.

High Street - the main shopping street in the centre of Oxford.

River Mersey |ˈməːzi|- is a river in north-western England.

T: Listen to the text attentively. Then we are going to do some task.

Now, say if the sentences are true or false. If the sentence is true, show a red card,

if the sentence is false, show a blue card.

1. The Peak District National Park is situated in the centre of London (England, not London)

2. The government created national park in 1949. True

3. There are only 2 million people visit this park every year. (22 million)

4. 75 percent of the British people live in villages and in the countryside. (in towns and cities) Where does they live?

5. London has a problem with a smoke and fog. (true)

6. 4000 people died because the smog lasted for several months(days).

7. That’s why the British people mustn’t burn coal in towns and cities.

8. In Britain all families have two or more cars. (only a quarter).

9. The British people use buses and trains for every journey they have (one out of ten)

10.  Looking after the environment has become an important part of British life.

3. Grammar.

T: Unfortunately, our environment has many problems. But we must do something to save our planet. There are many ways to help our nature.

Let's create environmental rules. All these rules include different modal verbs.

Let's have a rest and listen to the songs. You must say how many modal verbs do you notice?

 

 

Take the sheets of paper (worksheets) on your desks and start doing the task.

 

 

Match the modal verbs with their meaning:

 

  1.     Permission
  2.      Ability
  3.      Strong obligation
  4.     Prohibition
  5.      Advice

 

  1.   Must
  2.   Can
  3.   Should
  4.   Mustn’t
  5.   May

 

 

T: Now, you need fill in the missing modal verbs to create environmental rules. Open your copybooks, write down the date. You should write only missing words to save the time. You have 3 minutes....

Environmental rules:

  1. We .... care about our future and our children’s future.
  2. Factories ... use special filters on their smoke stacks.
  3. Every person .... plant more trees.
  4. We ....  also have special ecological education at schools.
  5. We have only one planet to live and we .... save it.
  6. After the picnic you .... forget to clean the place.
  7. We ..... throw rubbish anywhere and try to find a rubbish bin.
  8. We ... try to reduce the amount of water when washing or taking a bath.
  9. People .... protect plants and animals from becoming endangered or extinct.
  10. All these measures ... help to save our planet.

Let's check your answers. Well done!

III. Finishing the lesson.

1. Summing up.

Ps: We should think globally but act locally.

Remember! A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.

Pupils make a sun with the solutions of the problems on the planet Earth.

  • Take care of nature;
  • Protect our habitat;
  • Don’t litter;
  • Recycle used materials;
  • Clean rivers, lakes and seas;
  • Feed birds;
  • Help animals;;
  • Keep our school and schoolyard clean.

T:An outstanding English writer John Galsworthy said: «If you don’t think about the future you will not have it. » Let’s think about the future. Let’s keep our planet clean!

2. Homework.

T: Try to prepare the presentation about ecological situation in our city and tell us how to solve these problems.
