I think that almost everyone likes sushi. But do you know how to eat them properly? I will give you this information)

First of all you should know that there are 5 common types of sushi:

  • Nigiri - fish served over rice,
  • Sashimi - thinly sliced fish served without rice,
  • Maki – fillings wrapped in rice with nori on outside,
  • Uramaki – fillings wrapped in nori with rice on outside,
  • Temaki – maki rolled into cone shape.

Restaurant Etiquette

  • Respect the chef! Greet the chef, ask for the recommendations, but do not bother them while they are concentrating. Do not leave a tip. Bow when leaving.
  • Eating with chopsticks or fingers is equally acceptable! Sushi was traditionally a finger food so it is okay to eat it with your fingers, especially nigiri. Chopsticks should always be used for sashimi.
  • Towels are often provided. Use it to wipe your hands but not your face.

Soy Sauce

  • Do not dip rice into sauce. Rice will absorb to much sauce and become  too salty. With nigiri sushi, tip the piece upside down so only the fish touches the sauce.
  • Only pour a small amount of soy sauce into provided dish. It is rude to pour too much as it implies the sushi is bad.

Wasabi and Ginger

Do not mix wasabi into your soy sauce!

Ginger is meant as a palette cleanser. Eat ginger between pieces of sushi. Ginger should never be eaten on sushi.

                Eating sushi etiquette

Eat the sushi all in one bite. If the sushi is too big for a single bite, kindly ask the chef to make the pieces smaller.

Nigiri sushi should be eaten upside down, with the fish touching your tounge.

At home you have to find some more information about sushi. And do not forget to learn this one.
