І Підготовка до сприйняття іншомовного мовлення.

1.Привітання.

T: Good morning dear boys and girls! I’m glad to see you!

2.Повідомлення теми та мети уроку.

T: Today we continue working with the topic “Books and writers”. The theme of our today’s lesson is “In the world of books”. The motto of the lesson is “Love books, they are the source of knowledge and only knowledge can make us stronger and better” (These are the words of the famous Russian writer M. Gorky). ( слайд 1)

 So today we are going to speak about the role of books in people’s life, and about people who write books. I want to listen to your opinions about reading.

Pl 1: I think books play a very important role in our life, because they help us to understand life.

Pl 2: I agree with you! Books play a very important role in our life, because they open the door into the world of knowledge.

Pl 3: That’s true. Books teach us life, they teach to respect other people and ourselves.

Pl 4: I thinks so! Books help us in deciding problems of life.

Pl 5: It goes without saying that books develop our imagination and broaden our outlook.

Pl 6: Quite so! Books tell us about customs and traditions of different countries and people.

Pl 7: They tell us how great and wonderful the world is.

Pl 8: I’m of the same opinion! Books give us pleasant minutes; we have a good rest when we read them.

T: Thank you! It was pleasant for me to listen to all your opinions. I think you are good readers and I hope you will remain the same ones.

1. Now look at the blackboard, you can see some quotations of famous writers. Let us read and comment on it.

T: A myth is a traditionally sacred story, typically revolving around the activities of gods and heroes, which explains a natural phenomenon or cultural practice.

Fantasies: the activity of imagining things that are impossible or improbable.

Biographies: an account of someone’s life written by someone else.

Autobiographies: an account of person’s life written by that person.

Science fiction: is a genre of fiction in which the stories often tell about science and technology of the future.

Tall tails: an oral form of  entertainment: the audience appreciates the imaginative invention rather than the literal meaning of the tails.

Historical fiction: historical fiction tells a story that is set in the past. That setting is usually real and drawn from history.

Now you know more about the different genres of literature!

Pl 1: I’d like to tell you about Mark Twain. Mark Twain is a famous American writer and a journalist. His real name was Samuel Clemens. He was born in 1835 in Florida. Mark Twain started his literary career rather late. He worked as a journalist in a newspapers in Nevada and California during the years of the Civil War. In 1857 he became a sailor on the Mississippi. After the Civil War he worked as a reporter for the “ Territorial Enterprise” in Virginia City. He received the fame of the first humorist of America. “The Gilded Age”, “My Watch”, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” appeared during this period. In 1885 – “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”, “ The Prince and the Pauper” were published.

Pl 2: I’ve prepared information about Jack London. Jack London was a famous American writer, journalist and novelist of the early 20- th century. He was born in 1876 in San Francisco, California. His family was very poor, so Jack had to leave school to make money. In 1897, he went to Alaska to find gold. Instead, he found ideas for his stories there. Among his best-known works are the novels “The Call of the Wild”, “White Fang”, “Martin Eden”, and “The Iron Heel”.

Pl 3:  O’Henry (1862-1910). O’Henry’s real name was William Sydney Porter. He was born in Greensboro, a little town in North Carolina in 1862. O’Henry is one of the most widely published American authors. He is ranked among the world’s outstanding short-story writers. The best of these were published in books: “Cabbages and Kings”, “ The Four Million”, “Heart of the West”, “The Voice of the City” and others. The books of O’Henry reflect a specific period in American literature –the turn of the century. O’Henry was an outstanding humorist. He was very famous for his stories of city life.

He wrote about 150 stories with New York background.

Pl 4: Ernest Hemingway ( 1899-1961). Ernest Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois, in 1899. He was one of Hollywood’s favorite authors. His books, “The Old Man and the Sea”, “ The sun also rises”, and “A Farewell to Arms” were made into films. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. As a hunter, fisherman, boxer, soldier, war correspondent and author, Hemingway led a life of action.

 Hemingway wrote sx novels and more than 50 short stories. His early short fiction was greatly influenced by his outdoor life in the American mid.

Pl 5: Edgar Allan Poe (1809- 1849).  Edgar Allan Poe was an American poet, editor and author of short stories, most famous for his dark and morbid themes. Among his most famous and haunting works were “The Tell-Tale Heart” ( 1843) and “The Raven”( 1845)

Pl 6: Rudyard Kipling was born in India in 1865. His father worked there at that time. He was a famous painter. When Rudyard was six his parents sent him to England where he went to school. He did not like mathematics, but he was good at history. He even received a gold medal for his work in history.

Kipling came to India when he was seventeen. He began to work in a newspaper. At twenty-one he published his first book of poems.

Between 1887 and 1899 he travelled very much. During that time he wrote some of his best works. These were his children’s stories about animals and some books on history. In 1907 Kipling was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. He was  the first writer and the first Englishman who was awarded this prize.

Pl 6: Walter Scott is a creator of the historical novel in English literature. He was born in Edinburg, Scotland. He loved his native land deeply and was greatly interested in its past. In his youth, he made a good collection of the old Scottish ballads. Walter Scott first became known as a poet.  In 1814 his first novel Waverley appeared. During the next five years Scott published many novels among which are “Rob Roy”, “ Ivanhoe” and he became the most famous novelist of his days.

Pl 7: John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, a professor of Literature and English at Oxford and a story- teller, became famous with his trilogy “The Lord of the Rings”(1954-1955). It is especially loved by young people. His epic world is populated by elves, magicians, dwarves and monsters. Since the publication of “The Lord of the Rings”, a whole industry of fantasy literature, computer games, and other products have been created by the world-wide Tolkien’s fans to continue his work.

Pl 8: Lewis Carrol is a pen-name of Charles Dogson, the man who wrote such famous books for children as “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking- Glass”

Lewis Carrol is a wonderful children’s writer. He understood children and he could enter the world of children’s imagination.
