КЛАС: 4(8)-А

ТЕМА: Get Ready for your Exam: SPORT

МЕТА:

навчальна 1) розширити словниковий запас учнів із даної теми; 2) навчити учнів висловлюватися на тему важливості спорту у нашому житті; 3) ознайомити учнів із відмінностями спортивних ігор Америки та Європи; 4) спонукати учнів використовувати вивчені граматичні та лексичні структури у мовленні.

розвивальна 1) розвивати мовленнєві компетентності: говоріння, читання, слухання, письмо; 2) розвивати логіку, память, творче мислення учнів.

виховна 1) формувати в учнів позитивне ставлення до спорту та здорового життя; 2) заохочувати учнів пізнавати інші культури.

ОБЛАДНАННЯ: підручник Solutions Pre-Intermediate Students Book, дошка, відео Sport is Great Britain, ноутбук, проектор, роздатковий матеріал Word Clouds, текст “Team Sports, American Style”, кросворд та малюнки на тему “Sport”, скринька із словами.

Етап 1. Початок уроку: організація класу, повідомлення теми та практичних цілей уроку. –3 хв.

 

Good morning! I am glad to see you. How are you today? Is anybody absent? What is the matter with him/her?

Well, let’s start our lesson now. We have a lot of work to do. Today we shall continue working on the section Get Ready for your Exam. Today we will go into the topic of Sport more deeply. In this lesson we are going to discuss the importance of sport in our lives, develop reading and speaking skills and enlarge your vocabulary.

 

Етап 2. Актуалізація опорних знань і перевірка домашнього завдання. – 7 хв.

 

Please, remember us what’s your homework for today? (p. 32 Speaking exam task). Very well, but before checking your homework, we will do a little warm-up activity so that you will get ready to speak. Look at the Ex.3. (3 students)

Questions:

  • Which sports are popular with young people in your country?
  • Do you do any sports? Why?/Why not?
  • Do you think sport is important? Why?

Now we are going to check homework.

 

Етап 3. Аудіювання та виконання завдання Word Cloud.  Прийом: активне слухання та переклад речень, складання слів у речення – 7 хв.

 

Task I. As I have already mentioned sport plays a significant role in our lives and society. In order to prove this statement I have prepared a video for you. You will have to do two tasks while listening to this video. Your first task is the following: you ought to define the main topic of this video and understand its general ideas. (Listening for the first time)

Now you will work in pairs and do the task in word clouds. Each word cloud contains a few rows of words. You should put these words in the correct order and form a statement. Then you write the sentences down. These statements were made by famous people in this video. We shall listen to the video again and complete the task. (Listening for the second time)

Task II. The next task is Reading. The title of the article is “Team sports, American style”. Before reading the text let’s do a few pre-reading activities.

Pre-reading questions:

1.      Tick ( √ ) those sports that involve teams and add a few team sports on your own:

-          soccer          - hockey      - bowling

-          water polo   - checkers    - lacrosse

-          archery        -  baseball    - rowing

-          cricket         -  ice skating - car racing

2.      What are the most popular team sports in the US and Ukraine?

3.      Read the introductory paragraph. What is the topic of the article?

Now we shall start reading the text. The unknown words are highlighted in bold type. (Read and translate some sentences).

Team sports, American style

In many ways, Americans and Europeans do the same things, have the same interests, have similar lifestyles; but in “team sports”, America and Europe are two different continents. 

Europeans play football, and Americans play football; but surprisingly they do not play the same game. American football is played by men (and occasionally women) wearing helmets and protective clothing; the ball  is oval. European football is played with a round ball, by people wearing just socks, shorts, a shirt, and football boots.

We Americans have another popular outdoor game too; baseball - a classic American game, that is only played seriously in North America.

In today's "global village"(1),  lifestyles have become international; often the American model has spread to other countries of the world. American sports, however, have not spread all over the world, as American films and American fashions have. On the contrary, European sports have been more successful internationally; European football, indeed, is slowly developing in the USA (where we call it "soccer").

Besides these big sports, America of course has basketball - perhaps the most successful "export"(2). Invented at Springfield College, Massachusetts, in 1891, Basketball is quite certainly an "American game". Although it is not as big in Europe as in the USA, basketball has become much more popular in other countries than any other American team sport.

WHY IS AMERICA DIFFERENT?

The answer is simple. Until the 1960's, team sports were not played on a global scale. In Europe, people played European games, and in North America we played American games. The only real "global" sports were individual sports, such as golf and tennis.

Let’s do a comprehension task now. Answer the following questions.

  2. How does European “football” differ from American “soccer”?
  3. How do you understand the meaning of the expression “global village”? Explain it in the context.

Task III.

Now we will solve a crossword. Most of the words are related to the topic Sport. Answering some questions, you should apply your grammar knowledge too.

We will try to solve the clues across and down. Here are 20 questions. Below you can see highlighted words. Those are hints for you. So you should think logically in order to solve the puzzle. This exercise will help you to enlarge your vocabulary.

Етап 6: Розвиток навичок письма та вживання вивчених лексичних одиниць. Прийом: складання речень та історій. – 5 хв.

 

Task IV. Now we will play a game Writing Box. You already know the rules but I will remember you them briefly. You should pick up three words from the box and write a few sentences, using them. If you want, you may write a short story. While doing the task, keep in mind the correct usage of tenses and grammar structures.

 

Етап 7. Розвиток усного мовлення. Прийом: опис картинок на тему спорту. – 5 хв.

 

Task V. The following activity will develop speaking skills. Now I will hand out pictures in which you will see how people are doing different sports. You should work in pairs and describe a picture. You may use Vocabulary Bank of the unit. There you will find useful collocations. Remember that for describing a picture you should use the Present Simple and the Present Continuous tenses. The structure of the Present Continues tense is the following:

  • auxiliary verb to be in the Present Indefinite (am/is/are) and the Present Participle of the main word or an ing-form e.g. He is playing football now.

Thank you for your work. Now tell me please what new things you have learnt during our class and what skills you have developed. (Vocabulary, Listening, Team Sports in the US and Europe, Reading). Now I’ll give you homework for tomorrow. Please write a short review of the article “Team Sports, American Style”. It should be a brief review. 5-7 sentences will be enough!
