Topic: Technology and inventors

Learning outcomes: By the end of the lesson students will be able to:

  • use vocabulary on the topic
  • transform sentences in the active voice into passive
  • speak about different gadgets and inventors

 

PROCEDURE

Teacher: I am glad to see you at today’s lesson and hope   you are in a good mood. I wish you luck as we are going to speak about your favourite topic “Technology and inventors “.

     You will practice the words, passive voice , improve your speaking and  listening skills. I hope that by the end of the lesson  you will be able to speak about different gadgets and people who have done a lot in this field .

 

Warm-up

 Teacher: Let’s start our lesson with a vocabulary quiz. Look at the sentences and   try to fill in the missing words.

Teacher: Stand with your back to the board, your group mates will explain the words, try to guess what they are.

 

Grammar practice 

Teacher: Reading about new inventions we come across a lot of passive

                                 structures. How do we form Passive voice ?

S-S :  be + Past Participle

Teacher: Read a sentence and transform it into the Passive.

 1- They   use   cameras   in   shops   to   help   prevent    crime.

2- NASA will  have  designed  a new  robot  for  space exploration.

3- Manufactures   are  developing  a  new  type  of  phone.

 4- About  2  billion  people  use  the  Internet  every  day.                                                               

           5- They  always  store  important   information  about  the  company on  this computer.

6- A  new  worker  broke this fax-machine yesterday.

Speaking  Teacher:

Nowadays, teenagers can’t imagine their life without computers or  mobiles, while adults use other types of technology like CCTV, ID or TV.

Work in groups . You have 3 technologies, put them in the order where number 1 is the most important  or useful for you. Discuss  it in the groups and present your ideas speaking about advantages of these technologies.

 Teacher: Now, you  have a minute to relax.

No technology has been created without people, they are inventors, scientists and researchers who have made a great contribution to science. Here I have 2 puzzles, 2 pictures of famous people who have done a lot for us to have computers and mobiles as we do today.

Do these puzzles and tell us who they are.

Teacher: We learnt about Bill Gates some years ago. Do you remember anything about him? Look at the key words and make sentences.

  I would like to finish our lesson with the words of Mark Kennedy , a former London police officer, who said: "All of the biggest technological inventions created by man - the airplane, the automobile, the computer - say little about his intelligence, but speak volumes about his laziness." Do you agree with them?

I wish you to stay always intelligent, hard working and active and in no way lazy, no matter what kind of technology is to come in the future.
