Theme: Types of housing

Level: pre-intermediate

Objectives: to practice Conditionals (types 2, 3; wishes),

to revise vocabulary of housing,

to practice giving opinions and describing houses.

Textbook: PRIME-TIME 2 by Express Publishing

Equipment: IP BOARD

Procedure

1. Warming up

T. offers to watch video, using IWB SOFTWARE CD , to remind vocabulary about traditional English houses.

T. Now your task is to match the types of houses to the correct picture and give a short description of these types.

For example:

Ps.:

detached house – a house which is not joined to another house, with a painted wall and a hedge in front of it;

terraced house - a house which is joined to other houses on both sides with a wall in front of it, it is close to a busy road;

bungalow– a house with no upper floor and no garden.

Another task for Ps. – write down the names of houses under the pictures.

2. Ps. present their presentations on this theme.

They tell their stories, explain new words, ask their classmates to do some tasks. For example, the 1st presentation “Houses and homes”.

Ps :this presentation has 5 sections. Let’s start from the 1st:

The house of my dream

3. T. The home task for pupils was to prepare a topic “The house of my dream”. You can use Interactive board to draw and tell your stories. If I had an opportunity, what type of house would you live in? Imagine such a house.(SPEAKING ACTIVITY)

P.1.I wish I lived in a cottage. If I had a cottage, it would be on the sea coast. I wish my dream came true. If I bought a cottage, I would choose a beautiful one. I wish I had a green garden and a lot of exotic flowers there. I wish I could watch the sea

when it’s calm when there’re waves. My cottage would be large. In the evening I would sit in my garden, breathe fresh air and enjoy looking at the stars. I wish my friends visited me. We would have funny time.If only my cottage was my little paradise.

P.2.Now I live in a block of flats. It seems to me that it's the cheapest type of dwelling in a town. But frankly speaking my dream is to live in a detached house. Why? First of all your neighbours can never disturb you, for instance by hammering a nail into the wall. But at the same time if you want to ask your neighbours for something or just have a , you can visit them. As you have some land around the house you can build outhouses; and if I had a detached house, I would build a garage,

maybe a padding pool and certainly I would arrange some flowerbeds as I have a green thumb. I hope that one day I will have such a house.

P.3.The house of my dream must be a comfortable well-planned two-storied cottage. Not so large of course. It would be situated in a quite ecologically clean place or street. In front of the house there would be a green lawn and flower. And also a big shaggy dog would live in his booth in our yard. There would be a large kitchen, a pantry, a dining-room, a cosy sitting-room with a fireplace and big windows on the ground floor. There should be bedrooms with the own separated bathrooms on the first floor, and somebody`s study upstairs. And my room should be in the garret. And a balcony also should be. Also If I lived in that house, I would have modern and quite new furniture.

P.4. I wish I had a mansion because it would have three floors and a lot of rooms.  If I lived there, I would have a study, a library, a gym, a bedroom and other rooms for me. I wish I had a mansion to invite my friends to have parties. If I lived in this house, I would have a huge ground around it and play or cook on a barbecue. Outside there would be a big pool where I could swim and relax.

The dialogue between two pupils:

M.Have you ever thought about your ideal home?

C: I have, actually; I’ve always wanted to build my dream home myself.

M: What would it be like?

C: Well, it would be spacious and located next to a park, because a nice view is important to me.

M: How many rooms would it have?

C: I’d like to have three bedrooms on a second floor with balconies on each, and one main bedroom on the main floor with an attached suite. I’d also like to have a large living room and kitchen connected to each other so that there would be one large open space for people to spend time with each other.

M: How many bathrooms would you dream home have?

C: I’d have one guest bathroom in the basement; one attached to the main bedroom, and one upstairs, so a total of three.

M: How would you decorate your house?

C: I don’t like a lot of clutter, so I wouldn’t have lots of things out. I would have a few vases on the mantel piece and some pictures of my family on the walls, but other than that, most things would be kept in closets.

M: How many TVs would your dream home have?

C: I think TV is a great waste of time, so I would only have one small TV in the kitchen to watch the news in the morning.

4. Grammar.

T. Let’s consolidate our grammar. We are going to talk about two types of Conditionals @ Wishes. You should explain the type , choose the right structure on the blackboard and give your example.

P. 1. We use the 2nd type to talk about an imaginary situation or give advice in the present or future and we use the structure:  If S Ved/2, S would V.

If I had a lot of money, I would buy a mansion.

P. 2.We use the3d type to express an imaginary situation in the past and to express regret or criticism. The structure is:  If S hadVed/3, S would have Ved/3.

If I had taken your advice, I wouldn’t been in trouble.

P.3.We use the structureI wish/If only SVed/2 or Swas/were Ving to say that we would like something to be different in the present.

If only I was on holiday right now.

P.4. We usethe structure.I wish/If only Shad Ved/3 to express a regret about something that happened or didn’t happen in the past.

I wish I had booked the plane tickets earlier.

T. Now let’s watch about these grammar materials with the examples on our whiteboard:

T. We continue our practice doing some exercises.

But at first l‘ll divide you into two teams. It will be like a competition. If you give a right answer, you will get 2 points. So let’s start:

T. The aim of the next task is to match – if clause – to – main clause – of the sentence. I’ll give you different parts of the sentences, listen to your classmates, say the right part then go to the blackboard to stick and say the type of this sentence:

For example,

  •          If you hadn’t felt tired,  you could have gone to the cinema with us.

This is the 3d type of conditionals.

T. And now the real game for you. We have two teams A and B so you’ll work in turn. Go to the whiteboard, choose the right answer and press on it. After this game we’ll see your score.

T. I’d like you to watch another pupil’s work, a smallvideo -roller aboutamazing and unusual buildings in the world. She prepared some questions for you.

P. And now my questions for you.

1. What do these buildings look like?

2. How can you describe them?

Ps. choose the pictures they liked and describe them, for example:

  •           I am impressed by this building. It seems distorted. I think it is unusual only outside but inside it is like a regular apartment that you can live in it. I wish I had such a house in my town.   It would be interesting sometimes to pass by and admire it.

  •           This house has many small houses allegedly facing each other. It is similar to building with Lego cubes. It has nototal covering. I think many families can live there.

  •

  •          This building is very amazing. It looks like a basket. It is made of sticks. I think this building is not for living in it. Maybe it‘s a supermarket. It’s very big and cool. If I lived there, I would do shopping in this supermarket.

  •          I like this building. It’s very interesting and exciting. I’m sure that it’s a school of music. It looks like a piano and guitar joined together. It’s made of glass and steel. It’s very high. I think a lot of people like this building because it is impressive. If I was a student, I would go to this music school. I think most of students enjoy studying the

  •          I like this building. It is very unusual because it looks like a huge stone. I can’t see a door but I can see some windows. The roof is made of small stones. I think this house is for hunters. I wish I lived in it for some time on holiday.

  •           It is very and fragile house. It looks like it has grown out of the ground covered with grass roof. I wish I had such a house in the countryside.

  •          I like this house. I think it’s a small hotel.  It is unusual because it looks like a boot. It has a door and some windows. It has no covering. If I spent a holiday in that country, I would stay in this hotel for a while.

  •          This house is like turned upside down. It is made of white marble. I think people can use it as a museum. It is decorated with white columns. The door and the windows of this house are upset too. Its name is “Wonderworks”. I can see a palm on the roof and it grows down. I like this house. If I lived in that city, I would visit it sure exactly.

  •          This building looks like a torch. I think people use it for different exhibitions and events. I can see stairs to go up. I think it’s made of plastic and glass.  It is very high and I’m sure there is a stunning view from the top. I wish I would be there one day.

  •          This building is like a needle. It’s very modern and high. I think it’s made of steel and glass. It has all modern conveniences. I am sure it’s a pleasure to live in it. If I had a lot of money, I would buy a flat there.

4. Game “What? Where? When?”

T. That’s not all. Do you remember the game “What? Where? When? Somebody send a quest ion and a team should give the right answer in a minute. Now we are going to play it.

Our English friend sent a letter by E-mail with the quest ion, photos and a prize for you so let’s read.

The answeris: The queen lives in it.

T. But another question – what is the name of this house?

T.The right answer is The Windsor Castle. It is an official residence of the Queen and fortress for over 900 years. The Castle is a working palace today. The Queen uses it both as private home where she usually spends her weekendsand a Royal residence at which she undertakes certain formal duties.

I offer you to watch a video about this amazing, magnificent building because it is the largest occupied castle in the world.

Competitions for captains:

T. Let’s return to our questions: what is inside the box? Our captains have a prompt:

It’s like a snow cap for a mountain,

It’s like a roof for a house

It can cover the main part of our body

It’s useful, cool and funny.

T. Yes, the right answer is a hat. Look at this beautiful hat. It is for parades and festivals. You can put it on.

Conclusion:

T. I am pleased with your work at the lesson. I hope your dreams about your house will come true.

Thank you for your excellent work. Our lesson is over. Good bye.
