Travelling by plane.

Duration: 45 minutes

Objectives:  to teach students to use language related to airports, aircraft, and air travel;

                      to develop speaking skills and listening comprehension;

                      to broaden students’ knowledge about modern problems of travelling;

                      to develop creative thinking;

                      to revise and enrich students’ vocabulary on the topic;

                      to motivate them in expressing their own opinions on the topic.

Procedure

I.  Introduction

T: Hello everyone! What is your mood? I hope you are in a good mood, aren’t you? (My mood is excellent because I slept well.)  Did you dream of anything?  (Yes, I was at home.)

So, guys, Do you still remember what you were taught in the previous class? Let’s check. (Relative pronouns)

Checking homework (SB ex.6, p.38)

Choose the correct relative pronouns. Tick two sentences where you can leave out the relative pronoun.

  1. Breakfast was the only meal________ I like.
  2. Old Trafford is the stadium________ Manchester United play.
  3. London is a city ________ has some great museums.
  4. Coldplay is a group _______  songs make me sad.
  5. Benny Hill was an English comedian ______ my parents loved.

T: Good job.

II. Warm-up

T: Close your eyes and listen to. I say the word “Travelling”. You should sit with your eyes closed for ten seconds and think about that word or what you imagine during the ten seconds. You are right - The topic of our lesson is “Travelling by plane.”

  • How do you feel when you travel? (e.g. relaxed, bored, nervous)
  • Do you prefer to travel by coach, plane, or train? Say way?
  • The last time you traveled, did you arrive at the airport or station early, on time or late?

III. Main part

Pre-listening (10-12 min)

T: Now you must work individually and match as many words as you can without checking the meanings.

You have 1-2 minutes.

Exercise 2

Match the airport vocabulary from the box with the definitions.

T:  Answer the questions to check your understanding.

  • What do you carry in your hand luggage?
  • What budget airlines do you know?
  • What do people do in a departure lounge?

Exercise 3

Complete the text with the correct forms of the words and phrases from exercise 2.

I 1 booked my flight  to New York  online with  a 2_________ airline. It was a bargain!  I printed my 3_________ at home, so I didn’t need to go the 4_________ . I just went straight to 5________ . I checked a monitor in the 6________ and saw that my flight was 7________ by half an hour. T: Do you generally sleep during journeys? If not what do you do? Do you ever take school books on a journey?

 

While-listening

T:  Look at the Active Listening box. Read it. Then look at the visuals to help you decide what the context of the audio recording is . Make a prediction, listen to key words try to guess what the people are talking about.

P: -I can predict what an audio recording is going to be about.

  • Where the two people in the photo are and why? (they are on a plane because they are traveling somewhere)
  • Do they know each other? (e.g. No, because she looks very smart, like a businesswoman and he is dressed very casually)

T: Look for keywords in the questions and finally choose the correct answers in the summary. What do you think and Why?  e.g. two people- only Tom and Kate are mentioned in the questions, plane- it says flight, problems- Tom missed a flight, Kate’s dad missed a flight. Don’t tell the Ss if they are right or wrong.

Exercise 4

Read and choose the correct answers in the summary.

This is a conversation between 1 two/three people on a  2plane/train. They are talking about the 3fun/problems you can have when you travel.

Exercise 5

Listen to the conversation again and choose the correct answers.

T: What do you think the prediction tasks helped you to understand? Which was more useful- looking at the photo or the questions.

IV. Speaking

Exercise 6

T: Think of the time you had a problem when you were traveling.  Could it be a short or a long journey? What happened?  What did you feel? In pairs, tell you stories Use the prompts to help you.

You miss your train  you can’t get a seat  it’s too crowded  it’s fully booked  you can’t find your ticket  you feel ill on the coach your flight/bus is delayed you get on the wrong bus

Exercise 7

In pairs, discuss how to avoid/solve the problems in ex.6. Use the ideas.

T: You can give advice in such way: e.g. If I were you, I would ……  ; It’s important to ……..; You should reserve a seat before you travel. (2 min)  then join pairs into groups of four. You can share your ideas and decide on the best three pieces of advice for travelling. Which ideas are the best and whose group?

Allow plenty of time for your journey book a seat  book your ticket early  check for up-to-date travel news  not travel in the high season  make a list and pack carefully  pay attention.

V. Summing up

T: - What have you learned at today’s lesson? Think about what you found new, interesting, easy or challenging.

T: You have been working hard today. I hope you have learnt a lot about travelling by plane.

VI. Hometask

WB page 33, you can make notes about what makes a trip an adventurous experience. You can share you ideas after Ex.1 in the next lesson.
