Pupil 1: Dear guests! You are welcome to London. As you know, London stands on the river Thames, it is not very long but it is very deep. Londoners call it “the Father of London”.
London, the capital of the UK, is a very old city. It is two thousand years old. Many years ago London was a small town which was founded by Romans and it was called “Londinium”.
Now London is a big port and a beautiful city with large squares and parks. About 7 million people live there.
Pupil 2: And now we start our tour from Tower Bridge. It is the most famous bridge over the Thames. It is more than 100 years old. Construction started in 1886 and took 8 years. The Bridge was officially opened on 30 June 1894 by The Prince of Wales. To control the passage of river traffic through the bridge, a number of different rules and signals were employed. Daytime control was provided by red semaphore signals. At night, coloured lights were used: 2 red lights to show that the bridge was closed, and two green to show that it was open. In foggy weather, a gong was sounded as well. From Tower Bridge you can see the Tower of London.
Pupil 3: Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress, more commonly known as the Tower of London is a very old building. It is nine hundred years old. The Tower of London has played a prominent role in English history. It was besieged several times and controlling it has been important to controlling the country. It was used as a fortress, a royal palace and a prison. Now it's a museum. There are many ravens in the Tower. The English people like them very much. A man looks after the ravens and gives them food in the morning and in the evening.
Pupil 4: Now you can see St. Paul’s Cathedral. One of the greatest English churches, and it is not far from the Tower of London. The famous English architect Sir Christopher Wren built it after the Great Fire. It is a beautiful building with many columns and towers. It was all planned and carried out by one man. It took him 35 years. The Cathedral was begun in 1675. It was opened in 1697 but was finished only in 1710, when Wren was almost 80 years old. When Wren was an old man of 90, he was carried here once a year, so that he could see his beautiful work.
Sir Christopher Wren lies buried under the roof of his own great work. These words are written on his grave, "If you want to see his monument, look around."
There are memorials to many famous men of England in the Cathedral. Among them are generals and admirals. Admiral Nelson is buried here too.
St. Paul's Cathedral is the second largest church in Europe and the greatest of English churches. The bell Big Paul is the greatest in England. It weighs 17 tons. The high of the Cathedral is 110 meters.
Pupil 5: The Houses of Parliament is the seat of the British government. Another name of this building is the Palace of Westminster. There two towers in the Palace of Westminster: the Victoria Tower and the Clock Tower, another name of which is Big Ben. Big Ben is the symbol of London.
The Houses of Parliament are in Parliament Square. It is a very large square and no people around, only a tall policeman in the middle. The Houses of Parliament is a long building that stretches for about 1000 feet. Behind it there is the Thames and the Westminster Bridge. The Westminster Abbey stands opposite the Houses of Parliament. It is the most popular and widely spread image of London. There are many meeting halls and various parliamentary offices in this famous palace.
The light at night above Big Ben and the flag on the top of Victoria Tower during the day-time is the signal for the people of London that the members of Parliament are watching over the nation's interests. The Houses of Parliament can be visited by the public.
Pupil 6: Now we are at Buckingham Palace. The Palace is the official home of the British royal family since 1837 and today is the administrative headquarters of the Monarch.
Buckingham Palace has 775 rooms. These include 19 State Rooms, 52 Royal and guests bedrooms, 188 staff bedrooms, 92 offices and 78 bathrooms. The building is 108 meters long across the front and 24 meters high.
More than 50,000 people visit the Palace each year as guests to banquets, lunches, dinners, receptions and the Royal Garden Party.
The Ballroom has been used variously as a concert hall for memorial concerts and performances of the arts and it is the regular venue for Investitures of which there are usually 21a year—9 in spring, 2 in summer and 10 in autumn.
Although the Buckingham Palace is furnished and decorated with priceless works of art that form part of the Royal Collection and is one of the major art collections in the world, it is neither an art gallery nor a museum.
When the flag is flying on the top the Queen is at home.
