( suggested answers: Superfood is used to describe food which is said to have great health benefits. Blueberries contain significant amounts of antioxidants, vitamin  C, manganese and dietary fibre. Other superfoods include apples, broccoli, salmon.) V.  Reading.

T: Read the text. What is the conclusion? Do superfoods exist?

***

People sometimes talk about superfoods. Some types of food are super because they are extremely healthy. But superfood is not a scientific name. Some scientists think it’s wrong to believe that some foods have special ingredients that can protect us.

Superfoods are usually fruit and vegetables which produce a lot of antioxidants. Colourful fruit like blueberries are a good example. They help people to produce antioxidants which help fight heart problems and cancer. Some people now think that if they eat a few blueberries, they are going to be healthy. But scientists say that the important thing is to have a balanced diet, to eat a bit of everything, not just eat one or two superfoods

Now, shops and food companies have to be careful. The European Union says that they need scientific evidence to call food superfood.

But is the name superfood useful? A simple carton of milk is super because milk contains calcium and we know that calcium is good for bones. So the real superfoods are milk, apples, oranges, bananas, yoghurt, fish and tea. They are all parts of good, balanced diet.
