Listen to the stories about the books your classmates like (homework) and ask some questions:
Lewis Carrol is a pen-name of Charles Dogson, the man
who wrote such famous books for children as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.
Lewis Carrol was a wonderful children's writer. He understood children and he could enter the world of children's imagination.
Lewis Carroll’s famous story of the little girl who falls down a rabbit hole has been entertaining the young (and not so young) readers for almost 150 years.
It was probably the first book written not to educate children or give them moral instructions — but to entertain them.
Lewis Carroll was the name used by Charles Dodgson, a mathimatics teacher at Oxford University, when he was writing children’s books and poems.
When he became a teacher at Oxford Carroll used to take the daughters of his friend, Dean Liddell, for boat-rides on the river. On one of this river trips he told the story of Alice in Wonderland to young Alice Liddell. Later, he wrote the story down, and it was published in 1865.
As well as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass, Lewis Carroll wrote poems and another children’s book, Sylvie and Bruno. He was also a great letter writer and he invented games and puzzles. As an Oxford don (a teacher at Oxford and Cambridge), he also published mathematical works.
Samuel Langhorne Clemens wrote under the name Mark Twain. Clemens was well-known as the author of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn and other novels about growing up in a small town on Missouri river.
Walter Scott is a creator of the historical novel in English literature. He was born in Edinburgh,
Scotland. He loved his native land deeply and was greatly interested in its past. In his youth he made a good collection of the old Scottish ballads2. Walter Scott first became known as a poet. In 1814 his first novel Waverley appeared.
During the next few years Scott published many novels among which are Rob Roy, Ivanhoe, and he became the most famous novelist of his days.
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, a professor of Literature and English at Oxford and a story-teller, became famous with his trilogy The Lord of the Rings (1954-1955). It is especially loved by young people. Tolkien's epic world is populated by elves, magicians, dwarves and monsters. Since the publication of The Lord of the Rings, a whole industry of fantasy literature, computer games, and other products have been created by a world-wide Tolkien's fans to continue his work.
Daniel Defoe is the author of “Robinson Crusoe”. He is a famous English writer. The book is well-known all over the world and is one of my favourite books. It is about Robinson Crusoe and his strange adventures.
William Shakespeare was the greatest writer in the English language. He was bom in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. At the age of eighteen he married Anne Hathaway, who was eight years older that himself. A few years later he moved to London, where he worked as an actor and a playwright.
Shakespeare wrote thirty-seven plays and 154 sonnets (a kind of poem). His most famous plays are the four great tragedies — Othello, Macbeth, Hamlet, and King Lear. He also wrote several historical plays. Eight of these plays were about English kings, including Richard II, Henry V and Richard III. Others dealt with Roman history and included Julius Caesar and Anthony and Cleopatra. But not all of Shakespeare's plays were serious. He also wrote comedies, such as A Midsummer Night's Dream and Twelfth Night.
Shakespeare died in Stratford on 23 April 1616, but his plays are still very popular today. They have been translated into several different languages, and many of them; have been made into films, both in English and other languages.
Shakespeare's plays are about the great issues of life-love, hatred, jealousy, power, ambition, death and so, on. So, his plays are just as relevant today as they were in the sixteenth century.
Charlotte Bronte was a famous English writer. She was born in a poor family. There were six children in it — five girls and one boy. There mother died when Charlotte was a very small girl. The girls were sent to school in cold dark rooms and were always hungry. Charlotte’s two sisters died in that school. Later she described the school in her novel “Jane Eyre”.
When Charlotte left school she became a teacher at a school for girls. She lived with her two sisters and the brother. The Bronte sisters wrote poems and novels. Their first book of poems was published in 1846. “Jane Eyre” is Charlotte Bronte’s second novel. It was published in 1848 and made the writer famous.
Read the story and do the task.
Every Saturday night, the factory social club organized a dance at the local sports club. Maggie Toole always went with her best friend Anna and Anna's boyfriend. Maggie never had a date and didn't get many dances, either.
One Saturday after work, Anna said as usual, 'Be ready at seven, Mag.'
'Thanks but a friend is taking me tonight,' she replied.
Anna, the best-looking girl in the factory, was curious about her best friend's date. Most of the boys thought Maggie was plain.
'You'll meet him tonight!' said Maggie.
At 8.30 p.m., Maggie сайге into the hall with her date.
'Look at him! Isn't he handsome? I'm so pleased for Maggie,' Anna said to her boyfriend.
'Meet Terry O'Sullivan.' Maggie introduced her tall, dark-haired friend.
All the girls wanted to dance with Terry and 20 the boys suddenly became interested in Maggie. Terry danced with Maggie and then had a dance with Dempsey Donovan's date. Dempsey was the leader of the sports club and the best boxer. Dempsey went up to Terry.
'So, where are you from?' asked Dempsey aggressively. 'We've never seen you around here before.'
'Mind your own business,' replied Terry.
Dempsey nodded to two men standing nearby. They took Terry to the back room of the club. Meanwhile, Maggie was talking with a friend and she didn't see this. Then she started to look for Terry.
'He's gone to fight with Dempsey/ a girl told her. 'Oh no!' Maggie ran to the back room. She was worried about the fight.
She saw Dempsey and Terry facing each other. Maggie ran between them and caught Terry's arm. A knife fell to the floor.
'Knives are banned in the sports club and so are people carrying them,' said Dempsey. 'Get out!'
Two men took him out. Maggie walked up to Dempsey She was crying.
'He's Italian and his real name's Tony Spinelli.
I knew that before. I told him to call himself O'Sullivan. I was tired of coming on my own and Tony was really nice. But I came here as soon as I heard about the fight. I was frightened of problems 'cos I know the Italians carry knives. I guess I'll have to leave the club now.'
'No, Mag. I'll take you home. And how about next Saturday night? Will you come to the dance with me?'
Maggie's eyes sparkled.
'With you, Dempsey? You bet I will!'
Maggie didn’t get many dances or have a boyfriend because she .
a) a brilliant dancer, b) a good boxer, c) good-looking.
