Theme: Scotland: Culture Focus

Objectives:

• To read tourist information to check predictions and for specific facts
• To talk about preferences and discuss celebrations
• To get aware about Scotland’s culture and traditions
• To listen to the famous Scottish  song “Auld Lang Syne” by Robert Burns
• To do the culture focus test
• To make a group project

Material needed: Power Point presentation of the lesson, Scotland mind-map, pictures and photos of Scotland, Robert Burns’ portrait, large sheets of paper for group work, HO with Culture Test, cassette (‘Auld Lang Syne’ song)

 

Plan:

 

I. Warming-up

1. Theme and lesson objectives: at the previous lessons we have already spoken about different English-speaking countries, their geographical position, history, cities and people. Today we are having a culture focus lesson and we are going to speak about Scotland.

 

2. Eliciting.  What words do you associate with Scotland? (making a mind-map)

 

 

What do you know about Scotland? (general information)

Now look through the Factfile  on p.46 (SB) and tell what new information you have learned about Scotland?

3. Teacher’s additional information about Scotland’s geography and main cities (presentation)

 

II. Main part.

1. Pair-work. Discussion about Scotland (Ex. 1 p. 46) using the text when necessary.

Control: (as a whole class) What question was the easiest to answer?

    What questions could you guess to answer?

    What question was the most difficult for you?

2. Reading practice (Ex. 3 p. 46) read the text individually and state True or False sentences. Be ready to correct the false ones.

Before reading: introduction of the new words (presentation)

Control: as a whole class, proving with the help of the text.

3. Work on vocabulary.  Matching the verbs and nouns related to Scotland and its history (Ex. 1 p.31 LP) using the interactive board.

 

4. Vocabulary and grammar practice.  Completing the sentences using the above word-combinations on the interactive board.  (ex. 2 p. 31 LP)

 

5. Group-project: What celebration to go to (making a poster advertising the celebration). (Ex. 4 p. 46). Before presenting revise the modals for advice.

 

6. Writing practice.  2-3 sentences about personal preferences (writing individually in ExB)

Control: Who prefers Hogmanay? (by raising hands, one pupil may explain the choice)

 

7. Listening practice. What famous Scottish poet has been mentioned today? Read the information about him on p.47 and tell what language did he write in?

Match the original words of the first verse with the modern translation.

Control through listening.

 

8. Culture test. HO: individual cards.

 

III. Summing-up. What was the most interesting fact or information about Scotland that you have learned today? What new words can you add to Scotland mind-map?

I. Підготовка до сприйняття іншомовного мовлення

1. Повідомлення теми та мети уроку: at the previous lessons we have already spoken about different English-speaking countries, their geographical position, history, cities and people. Today we are having a culture focus lesson and we are going to speak about one of the parts of the United Kingdom - Scotland.

 

2. Мовленнєва розминка. Eliciting. a) Складання асоціативної мапи Шотландії.

 What words do you associate with Scotland? (making a mind-map on Board)

 

 

б) визначення основної інформації, відомої учням про Шотландію. What do you know about Scotland? (general information)

в) переглядове читання з метою визначення нової інформації. Now look through the Factfile  on p.46 (SB) and tell what new information can you add about Scotland?

3. Повідомлення вчителем додаткового матеріалу про географію та основні міста Шотландії з використанням презентації. Teacher’s additional information about Scotland’s geography and main cities (presentation on the interactive board)

 

II. Основна частина

1. Розвиток навичок діалогічного мовлення та парної роботи над текстом з метою пошуку необхідної інформації. Обговорення запитань про традиції святкування  в Шотландії. Pair-work. Discussion about Scotland (Ex. 1 p. 46) using the text when necessary.

2. Розвиток навичок читання з метою повного розуміння тексту. Reading practice (Ex. 3 p. 46) read the text individually and state True or False sentences. Be ready to correct the false ones.

4. Розвиток лексико-граматичних навичок.  Вживання необхідних за змістом словосполучень в реченнях у відповідному часі (з використанням інтерактивної дошки). Complete the sentences using the word-combinations from the previous exercise.  (ex. 2 p. 31 LP, on the interactive board)

 

5. Розвиток навичок писемного мовлення. Висловлювання особистих преференцій щодо відвідування святкувань в Шотландії. Перед початком роботи – повторення виразів для виловлювання уподобань (з використанням презентації). Write 2-3 sentences about your personal preferences as to what celebration you would like to visit in Scotland. (writing individually in ExB)

6. Розвиток навичок читання та аудіювання з виведенням на комунікацію.  What famous Scottish poet has been mentioned today? What do you know about him? Read more  information about Robert Burns on p.47 and tell what language did he write in?

Match the original words of the first verse of his song ‘Auld Lang Syne’ with the modern translation. Then listen to the song and check up.

7. Складання та презентація групового проекту: рекламний постер шотландського свята. Кожна група отримує завдання прорекламувати одне із шотландських свят для іноземного туриста. You have got the letters from some foreign tourists in which they have written about their cultural preferences (Ex. 4 p. 46). What celebration would you advise them to go to?  Make a poster advertising this celebration. Use the pictures, photos, key words or necessary information. When presenting don’t forget to use the modals for advice.
