Sport in our Life (7 Form)

Objectives:

- to form communicative competence;

- to improve writing, reading, speaking and listening  skills;

- to practise using vocabulary in monological speech;

-  to develop students' attention, memory, quick reaction and language guessing;

- to practise work in groups;

- to bring up love to physical education and sports;

- to teach students to keep up their fit.

Equipment: a laptop, a projector, a screen, students' presentations, a thematical video, handouts.

The type of the lesson: combined

Epigraph: "A sound mind in a sound body"

 

                                      Procedure

I. Introduction

T: Hello, everyone! I'm glad to see you. As you know, today we have an unusual lesson, because it is devoted to a very important problem. I suggest you talking about a healthy way of life. We know some people are healthy, some people are unhealthy. I'm sure, you agree with me that health is the most precious thing in our life. We can't buy health, but we can do a lot to keep it.

Today we're going to read, speak and discuss, improve our knowledge of the topic of sport and healthy lifestyle. Also we'll speak about the role of sport in our life.

Look at the screen, please! The epigraph of our lesson is a famous saying "A sound mind in a sound body".

II. Warming-up

Phonetic drills

T: Let's read a poem "Sport is fun".

Sport is fun for boys and girls.

It's much better than the toys.

You can sledge and ski and skate

And play snowballs with Kate.

You can swim and play football,

Hockey, tennis, volleyball.

You can jump and you can run,

You can have a lot of fun.

III. The Main Part of the Lesson

Vocabulary Practice (a group work)

T: Match the parts of the sentences. Exchange with the other group and translate them.

Card 1

1. A good laugh is the best medicine.

2. An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

3. Good health is above wealth.

4. Doing sport is a very sociable and enjoyable way to look after yourself.

5. Team sports help people to develop a good attitude to the people the work or study with.

6. Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.

Reading Practice

T: Put the sentences in the correct order and read the text "From the History of Golf".

Card 2

A  The game became so popular with the Scots that they spent too much time playing it.

B Golf was introduced to England in 1608 and the first golf clubs appeared near London.

C It is believed that golf was first played by the Romans.

D Nowadays more than 24 million people play golf at least once a year.

E In the 16th century Mary, the queen of Scots, played this game in France and the game had a success.

F But the fact is the game was  played by the Scots in the 14th or 15 th century.

G Since the 17 th century golf has become extremely popular all over the world.

H So the Scottish parliament made a law which didn't allow playing this game.

Lexical Game "Magic Box"

T: A student has to take a card from the "magic box", tead it aloud and the rest of the students are  to guess and give one word for definitions.

Card 3

1. A game for two teams that you play with a ball and a basket.

2. A game that you play on board.

3. A game for two teams that you play with the sticks on the ice-ground.

4. A game for two people that you play with a small ball on the table.

5. This kind of sport includes things like running, jumping, etc.

6. Canada's national sport is...

7. You can swim there in winter.

8. A place where boys and girls go in for sports...

9. A person that trains sportsmen in this or that kind of sport...

10. The sport of fighting in gloves.

Inter group activity

T: Ask your classmate about

Group 1 - sport he/she goes in for;

Group 2 - sport he/she likes to watch;

Group 3 - sport he/she doesn't like.

T: After the survey the leaders of the group are to announce the results.

IV. Summing-up. Reflection

T: Our lesson is coming to its end. I want to say that you were active, hardworking and smart. Well done! Your marks are good and excellent today. Now we have got a few minutes and I suggest you making a cinquain with the word Sport.

V. Home Assignment/ differential approach

T: If you want a higher mark (9-12), your task is to write an informal letter in at least 100 words. Write a letter to your pen-friend in which you write:

- why doing sport is important;

- about your PE lessons at school;

- advice him/her how to keep fit better.

T: For those who find it difficult to write a letter to an English-speaking friend, I suggest you preparing some information on the topic "The role sport in my life".
