Theme: Jobs and Professions

 

Aims and objectives: to enrich student’s vocabulary (new words and terms), to practice active vocabulary and to develop listening skills; to practice speaking skills; to teach student to work together and to complete a task; to develop student’s critical thinking.

Teaching aids, materials, equipment: writing papers, a book, a smart board, presentation.

Activities: group and individual work, pair work.

 

PROCEDURE

I.                  INTRODUCTION

T: Good afternoon! I am really very happy to see you again and I hope you’ll be able to solve all my tasks for you today. The theme of our lesson is “Jobs and professions”. Today we are going to practice speaking skills, listening skills, also you’ll learn the new words.

 

II.               WARMING UP

T: -Tell me, please about your parents. Who is your mother/father?

     -What other professions do you know?

     - There are many professions in the world, and today we’ll speak about some of them.

 

III.           MAIN PART OF THE LESSON

Vocabulary practice

T: Open you books at p.34 and look at ex.1. Let’s read the professions and label pictures.

  • What profession has the person on picture C? (a gardener)
  • Who is the stuntman? (the man on the picture A)
  • Where is the builder? (on the picture F)
  • Who is on picture E? (a firefighter)
  • Look at the picture B. Who is this? (a doctor)
  • And who can you see on the picture D? (a barman)

 

Game "Guess the job"

T: Ok. Let’s continue. You’ll listening  to the definition of professions, and your task will be guess and name them. 

 

-But first here are some professions:  (on the smart board)

  • administrator – адміністратор [ ədˈmɪn.ɪ.streɪ.tər ]
  • bricklayer- муляр [ ˈbrɪkˌleɪ.ər ]
  • architect – архітектор [ ˈɑː.kɪ.tekt ]
  • fashion designer - модельєр
  • conductor- провідник [ kənˈdʌk.tər ]
  • manager- менеджер, керівник [ ˈmænɪdʒə(r) ]
  • accountant- бухгалтер [ əˈkaʊn.tənt ]
  • sports instructor- спортивний інструктор
  • cashier- касир [ kæʃˈɪər ]
  • programmer- програміст [ ˈprəʊ.ɡræm.ər ]
  • decorator- декоратор [ ˈdek.ər.eɪ.tər ]
  • car mechanics- автомеханіки
  • physicist- фізик [ ˈfɪz.ɪ.sɪst ]
  • interpreter- перекладач [ ɪnˈtɜː.prɪ.tər ]
  • pharmacist- фармацевт [ ˈfɑː.mə.sɪst ]

 

  Now I’ll describe you a profession and you will be very attentive. You may use the sheets of paper with words.

 

  1. Some who can count well and keeps the money records of a business. (accountant)
  2. Someone who makes walls with bricks. (bricklayer)
  3. Someone who designs clothes. (fashion designer)
  4. Someone who writes computer programs. (programmer)
  5. Someone who gets cash or pays out money in a shop. (cashier )
  6. Someone who repairs cars. (car mechanics)
  7. Someone who works at the reception desk of a hotel. (administrator)
  8. Someone whose job is to design buildings. (architect)
  9. Someone whose job is to manage a company. (manager)
  10. Someone who studies or works in physics. (physicist)

 

T: Ok. Right.  Now, let’s do the similar task from ex.2. Look and read the task.

  • Do you understand? Ok. Let’s start doing.
  1. I’ve always wanted to help sick people, so I’m going to be a ….(doctor)
  2. I want to save lives, so I’m going to be a …… (firefighter)
  3. I like meeting people and socializing, so I’m going to be a ….(barman)
  4. I enjoy doing dangerous things, so I’m going to be a …..(stuntman)
  5. I love looking after plants, so I’m going to be a …….(gardener)
  6. I don’t mind working hard, so I’m going to be a …..(builder)

 

T: Now, look at the smart board. You’ll see the sentences with a missing word. You need to choose one letter a), b), or c) to the meaning of the sentence and write it into your copy book. For example: 1a, 2 b and so on. You have 3 minutes.

Listening

T: Now listen to three people talking about their plans for the future. Listen and match the people to the job they want to do and the reason why. (Ex. 5, p. 34)

 

  • What can you say about Ito?
  • The next boy is Roberto. What about him?
  • And what about Natasha?

 

Answers: Ito – firefighter – wants to save lives

                Roberto – barman – likes meeting people

   Natasha – doctor – likes helping sick people.

 

Reading

T: Ok, you have completed this task very well  and now, you have 3 minutes to read the short texts from Ex. 6, p.35 and after that you’ll answer the questions.

  • Ok. The first question:
  1. Who is still at school? (Ito and Natasha)
  2. Who is going to study Medicine? (Natasha)
  3. Who is exercises regularly? (Ito)
  4. Who has just completed a course? (Roberto)
  5. Who has already arranged a job for next summer? (Roberto)

Writing

T: Now you have a writting  work. Look at the Ex. 7, p 35. Read the task. Do you understand the task? Ok. Start doing it. You have 5 minutes.

  • Next Ex.8, p.35. In this exercise you have to choose correct word to complete the sentence. You may write only number of the sentence and word which you chose.
